16 Channel Elite Compact Series - 1.5 U Network Video Recorder
Review by Blaine Malowe on Oct 09, 2014
I'm new to the world of IP network video security cameras but I am big on do it yourself projects so I installed the system on my own instead of hiring an installer to do it. I'm guessing that I probably saved at least $3,000 on installation fees. The NVR is set up and working now and it is performing just fine. I'm getting excellent quality video recordings along with a lot of extra features. Here's some of the specifics of my experience with this NVR and Security Camera King.

Ordering was a piece of cake. Check boxes with mouse, provide payment information, done. I received the NVR and the custom cameras I decided to use (instead of a package system) all at the same time, within the same week that I placed my order. All components arrived in pristine condition, unharmed by shipping.

Mounting the cameras was easy. Running the cable was more tedious but not really difficult. Connecting to the NVR was not difficult either. Remember, if you are new to IP network systems, whether you have an elaborate business network or you are using this at home with just an Internet connection from an Internet Service Provider, you will more than likely need a multiple POE switch to use to provide your cameras with power through the same Cat 5 cable that you are running the video through.

Configuring the cameras and the NVR was not my strong suit. The NVR is easy to navigate, but setting up all those cameras was too much for me. So, I called Tech Support. I asked them what to do and not only did they tell me, but then they went and did it remotely too. All I had to do when they were done was the fine adjustments to the cameras for proper aiming. The recordings are high quality high definitions recordings, I have had no problems with the NVR, POE switch, or the cameras. I'd recommend this NVR as well as Security Camera king in whole to a friend.

This is basically the same NVR as the Security Camera King 16 channel Elite Mini, but this NVR allows for more storage space (up to 4 internal hard disk drives) and 3 main displays (HDMI, VGA, BNC) as it also has a BNC video out connection. The case is big enough that in exchange for some internal real estate equivalent to two internal hard drives you can also have an internal DVD burner installed. If making frequent copies or backing up files to DVD is something you do, you can't beat this because Security Camera King installs the DVD for free and it is incredibly inexpensive. The recorded videos are high quality and easy to watch. The GUI has many pages that can be accessed to change bit rate, resolution, motion detection, and so forth.

If you are looking for an easy to use and configure HD Network Recorder, this is one that will satisfy your needs. The DVD burner is really not needed for most as you can simply backup video or images through supplied USB connection if needed. No burner means more space inside the unit for HDD's too which can be important as HD cams can suck up your storage space if running/recording many at once. I had an earlier model NVR that was very similar but lacked the specs and internal components that were required to process and handle the large volumes of data produced by having a network of HD cams capable of 1080P output. With this new unit, I am now able to record in 1080P on all channels and at 30fps. A HUGE improvement over the previous model which limited me greatly as the NVR simply could not handle the traffic produced by the HD cameras. The GUI is pretty easy to work with and the APP is more of the same. I have it on my PC, Android phone and iPad. All seem to work just fine and the image quality is nice over local network or my Verizon 4G connection when outside the network. You can also access the cameras individually over a simple browser via IP address if you like. Most importantly, you can pick up the phone, call these guys (or email) and they answer!! They will work with you to resolve issues and I have been happy with the service I have received, most times, the issue is on my side, user error, go figure :P Shop with confidence, I have been very happy with my many products purchased from Security Camera King. Quick to ship too, ALWAYS a plus when you order new toys ;o)

Good NVR. Lots of features for a "compact" series. It has plenty of room for up to 4 internal hard disk drives or 2 if you have the optional internal DVD burner installed. I like the search and find functions. The On Screen Display is i9s easy to use and pretty straightforward. Security Camera King has an excellent technical support staff that was able to decipher what I thought was an insurmountable problem within just a couple of minutes.

Geez! I'm impressed! Security Camera King calls this their "Compact Series" NVR but other than storage and a couple other features it's more like a full size unit to me. After all, we are running 16 1080p (2 megapixel) cameras at 30 frames per second each simultaneously and it handles them with ease. The NVR comes with ears so you can screw this unit right into your server rack if you have one (we do) and it operates nicely and neatly from that position. We used an extension USB cord and installed a pull out tray directly beneath the NVR so we can use the tray to keep a page of notes on the cameras, log points, etc. and use it as a mouse pad. That keeps the front USB port open for a flash drive. Anytime we need backup copies we use the USB flash. For us it makes a lot more sense since a DVD will limit you to about 4 gigs of footage while 32 or even 64 gig flash drives are common and relatively cheap to buy these days. We copy our footage to the flash drive then take it over to one of our computers and burn the DVD from there. That allows us to have 4 internal hard disk drives for maximum storage potential. The eSATA option is nice, but we don't need it. The cameras were pretty easy to set up and configure with the NVR. We used the search feature to find the cameras and their IPs and we configured them by simply dividing 128 by the total number of cameras. Can't beat the features and performance of this unit. Security camera King now has us a regular and permanent customer.

This NVR is definitely a step forward in technology and performance. It's easy to install and use, and the capacity for megapixel resolutions, frame rates and number of cameras is outstanding (for example you can record 16 cameras simultaneously at 2 megapixels (1080p) resolution at 30 frames per second or even 16 cameras at a full 3 megapixel resolution quality at 20 frames per second. With that being said, make certain you pre-plan well for the use of your NVR so you will know approximately how much potential storage you'll need to record and maintain your security camera recordings. At the new 1.5 U size about the only sacrifice I see being mad by the unit is less storage space potential. The NVR can still record audio; it still offers RS485 PTZ camera control, and alarm inputs and outputs. Three different but simultaneous video output types (BNC, HDMI, and VGA) should provide you with plant of monitor support. This things got a heck of a power plant because it seems to be able to handle the recording of a heck of a lot of data (up to a maximum of 128Mbps) without any difficulty; nor dropped frames, lost video, or interference. Our machine has demonstrated great performance thus far and I have no reason to believe that it won't continue to doe so. We definitely like it!

WOW! This is one powerful NVR! 16 Channels of 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second or if you really want to go hog wild you can reduce the frame rate a little and go with full 3 Megapixel cameras for all 16 channels. I have to be honest and tell you that I didn't think it would handle all that input without some "give and take" in resolution or frame rate, but our unit is operating just fine without any dropped frames, no slow down in recording rate, and absolutely no crashes. This is amazing to me because at home, even with my high speed cable connection I sometimes have problems watching one 1080p movie on my computer without hiccups. 16 megapixel network cameras is a lot to look at and you may want to use more than one display monitor (we actually use two) however, this NVR can handle up to 3 simultaneous main monitor displays using the standard HDMI, VGA, and BNC video output connections. There are two additional USB 2.0 ports on the back of the unit for peripheral devices as well as and eSATA port for external hard disk drives. (We started doing a lot of recording and found that we needed more drive space so we ended up purchasing Security Camera Kings NAS-4 unit which works great). The video quality is super, there are plenty of extra features, and the price is very reasonable as well. I'll recommend this to colleagues without any problem.
