16 Channel Hybrid Federal Series H.264 DVR/NVR
Review by Coby Saulka on Sep 09, 2014
It's boxy, but it's good. Seriously, we've had no problems with this hybrid and it works great. We get excellent video recording, whether it is analog or network. The unit itself is solid, good quality, is loaded with programmable features, and is large enough to hold both internal hard disk drives and an optional internal DVD burner. We haven't had any issues with the remote access functions either. Security Camera King makes their apps and software for this available for free and it works fine on our company PC's and smartphones. This is the first time we have used Security Camera King, but I don't think it will be the last.

Nice hybrid recorder. I experienced no problems. Good recording both on the analog 960H format side and the megapixel format on the NVR side. I got excellent technical support from Security Camera King. I'll give the technical support 5+ stars and the hybrid 4 stars.

You've probably found this review because you are searching for a security DVR that doesn't cost thousands of dollars. Your question is whether or not this one is any good. The answer to that question hinges upon your expectations. In my case I have experience with all sorts of video systems ranging from the very top, American designed & built casino-grade systems to the lowest of the low Chinese junk. I would rank this unit at the high end of what the Chinese have to offer.

After using the unit for a little over a month now, the unit certainly appears stable. The setup process is akin to the other Chinese stuff that's out there. There is a rudimentary GUI that will output on your HDMI/VGA/BNC display. Use a combination of the front panel and the included mouse to control the system. I wouldn't recommend doing more than absolutely necessary to get the system online with the GUI. Your other configuration tasks will be far easier to manage via web browser.

Ah, the web interface. You need to be aware that the web interface ONLY works with Internet Explorer. They rely on ActiveX controls to interface with the DVR, and that can only be accomplished in IE. So if you're a Mac/Linux user, you're out. Also, if you're in a corporate environment that has shunned IE (as my company has) then you're going to have to convince your IT department to make an exception for you.

We have loaded ours up with 16 analog inputs and 7 additional 2MP IP cameras. The unit is limited in what it can handle in terms of bits per second, so you will need to make some compromises with regard to image quality as more IP inputs are added.

The first thing you will need to know about connecting IP cameras is if you have any old infrastructure, it probably won't work. Be prepared to shell out for some H.264 ONVIF cameras if you are going to be connecting via IP. Your old MJPEG cameras won't work. Shop smart on cams for your best price/performance equation.

This system comes advertised as having apps for iOS and Android available. True. There are 2 versions of the Android app. One is paid, one is free. The "lite" version is the free one. It works. It actually works pretty well, even on 3G speeds. But the app is a bit clunky, and does not fully honor the Android home / back / menu buttons. Not a big deal once you learn what to expect, but you may find yourself a bit puzzled at first.

I would give this unit a 3-star review because many of the features come across as half-baked. The functionality is technically there, but the usability leaves something to be desired. I'm adding a star to the review because the SecurityCameraKing support guys have been available to provide assistance whenever I have needed them, and they've always been courteous and helpful. So while the native usability of the system is a bit flawed, the fact that someone who speaks English is there to help out really does compensate for that.

Beyond that, the system does work for the intended purpose, and given the price, we'll stick with it for a while until we outgrow it.

I don't think you can get much better than this for a hybrid choice. It's almost like having one complete IP network system as far as the clarity and quality of the recorded videos are concerned. The recorder is easy to program with Security Camera King's On Screen Display menu controller and I think the overall design of the unit is nice as well. With units like this that are available, there should be no more fuzzy, unclear security videos that are seen on news programs and the like because that simply doesn't happen with this recorder; the quality is just so much better. In addition to the great quality video each side of the recorder offers, it also has the capability to utilize two-way audio, multiple monitor displays, and multiple user simultaneous remote control access. In addition, the programs and apps needed for the devices to make use of this function are provided by Security Camera King free of charge. I have seen other brands/dealers with similar products but they don't offer nearly the same amount or type of features that Security Camera King does and their technical support department is great. If you call for help you won't be put on a hold queue for 45 minutes and the technicians are real CCTV professionals that know what they are talking about and can talk about it in fluent English. As you can tell, I'm partial, and will probably remain that way. Great Product. Great Customer Service.

This hybrid DVR/NVR is the closest way you can "cheat" to coming close to owning a full 32 camera IP network megapixel camera system without actually owning one! The 960H format of the analog side of this DVR is incredibly detailed, crisp, and clear in format with accurate coloring. The wide screen format is also a plus. On the "truly" digital side of things the megapixel camera side is all that and more. What's best is that Security Camera King has programmed the software that drives this recorder with a probably what could be considered just about the maximum amount of features and options. There is not much left to the imagination as it seems as if they have thought of it all. When we purchased our recorder we ordered 4 large internal hard disk drives and the DVD burner. You really can't beat the deal on these items as Security Camera King will install them for free and make sure they checkout before shipping the unit. With three independent monitor display audio outputs and 16 channels of audio recording you won't miss a thing if you that is what you desire. The remote access feature is another big plus. Although there are only four of us that remotely access the unit we have tried doing it all simultaneously without a hitch. As long as the longevity of the product is as good as the quality, I don't think you could find a better hybrid.

I work in a government office that not only requires the use of full time video security cameras but they must meet the 960H resolution spec minimum Security Camera King calls it their "Federal" series) for analog cameras. Recently we acquired this 16 channel SCK "Federal" hybrid and all I can say is that it works like a charm. Video recordings are crystal clear, color accurate, and stable. Multiple remote user access works great as do the other features. If you can't make facial recognition using this hybrid DVR/NVR then there must be something wrong with your system.

This is a great solution for using multiple cameras at a reasonable price while obtaining high resolution video recordings. The 16 cameras that create the analog 960H resolution recording work very well and they are all new cameras with a Sony 960H sensor in them. I have to say that I truly do believe that Security Camera King has designed a digital processing chip that can make the most out of these 960H sensors because I think their recorded video is better than other manufacturers' results that I have seen. The IP network side of this hybrid gives us the opportunity to experience the IP network systems and literally compare them to the maximum resolution (960H) available from analog transmission products. The megapixel resolution is very detailed and you will not miss a single facial identification if your camera is set up properly with megapixel resolution. I have the latest and greatest computer with all the bells and whistles and I guarantee you it could not handle the workload that this hybrid recorder unit can. I'm assuming that's because this hybrid takes advantage of dual core processing and the digital processing chips and main board are wired specifically for video management. Regardless of what actually makes it work so well, I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in both 960H resolution and megapixel resolution recording.

We ordered this hybrid DVR/NVR (and many other items) on line and we received the entire shipment in 3 days. Nothing was damaged, everything was packed well, and the equipment was in pristine shape. Physical installation went very smoothly. I was asked to install the system for the company I work for and I gladly agreed as it would be a change in pace from my daily routine. We had already performed a survey to determine where and what kind of cameras were needed so all I had to do for that end of it was mount the cameras, run the cables, and aim and adjust the cameras. Probably the single most tedious and challenging part of the installation was running the cables (drilling holes in walls or studs, attaching cable, etc.) As for this Hybrid DVR/NVR, again the physical attachment of all the cables, USB mouse, etc was a piece of cake too. The DVR is configured by using something called an On Screen Display or OSD. Basically, they are a series of computer type pages that accept various inputs to configure the entire system (motion detection control, alarms, audio, camera adjustments, etc.) and operate the DVR/NVR. Again, the OSD was easy to operate as far as physically maneuvering around the pages and providing input, but I must admit that knowing what to do was a little challenging for me. The manual doesn't necessarily explain "why" you do what you do (or should do) it just tells you to do this or do that. So eventually I called Security Camera King support and asked for help. These guys were spectacular. They explained everything I asked about in detail and told just exactly what I needed to do. This is NOT your average technical support service. Our system is up and everything is working well. The 960H format is darn close to the lower end of megapixel quality and the NVR side is even better. The video recordings for either type of system (DVR side or NVR side) are very clear and colorful, and extremely sharp and well defined. Surprisingly, the unit operates without producing a large amount of heat and handles all tasks extremely well, including the remote access feature via our network/Internet. The 3 year warranty combined with the fantastic technical support makes this purchase from Security Camera King one that just can't go wrong.
