4 Channel Federal Mini Series 960H Security DVR
Review by Robert Rasmussen on Sep 28, 2014
I own a gas station/convenience store near a local tourist attraction and my place is open 24/7. I already have a 16 camera D1 system installed which came with the place when I purchased it. It was supposed to be state of the art when it was originally installed, and I am happy with the results of the D1 resolution recordings. Recently, I bought into a Subway franchise which is now where "dead" space use to be in the store. I'm fairly happy with business right now. The Subway has no video security, and is an open area to the store, but has it's own entrance/exit door to the outside as well. In other words, I now feel like my security system is lacking because we have an uncovered entrance and a separate uncovered cash register area.

I found out from the previous owner that the D1 system already installed was purchased from Security Camera King. Since it is still working well without any problems I decided to check out this site. After much thought, I decided to purchase the 4 channel 960H format DVR and 4 new cameras. I installed everything myself and I have to admit, it was relatively easy. I love the 960H format as it does a good job of displaying details good enough for facial identification. I didn't need anything more than 4 cameras, so this DVR was a great add on to my present system. The DVR's OSD (On Screen Display) menu is very similar to my current one so navigating around the pages or menus and using the DVR was particularly easy for me. In addition there a lot of features that come with this recorder even though they call it a "Mini." I have had no problems with it as I have had no problems with my older D1 unit as well. Remote access works fine as well. I can't see how I could rate this anything but five stars.

I'm partial to the 960H format because I like the widescreen display. Not that I sit for hours and watch my security camera videos like they are a theater movie but I do think that with the newer 960H compatible sensor chips this is almost as good as having a megapixel camera system. I found the DVR to be fast, efficient, and easy to operate. The cooling fan or internal hard drives (I don't know which one or if it is both) make a little noise every now and then, but certainly isn't anything disturbing. I like the idea of multiple main display video outputs without the need for splitters or extra equipment. The remote access function works great with my iPhone I am getting quite accustomed to "checking in" on my system whenever I have "down time" like waiting in lines, etc. I also found it surprising that Security Camera King offers a 3 year warranty on this recorder at no extra charge as most other retailers may go as high as 1 year but anything after that you usually have to pay extra for.

I've read where they say that the 960H format is the bridge between analog and digital transmission for video security cameras. I realize that it is not the same as a megapixel system, but as far as I am concerned it is the best format you can get in analog systems. This "Mini" DVR is no exception. Since it appears as though I am the first one to comment on this DVR I assume it must be a relatively new offering from Security Camera King and so I am glad they have made this format available for a small, 4 channel system. The DVR records excellent videos that are sharp, colorful, and large. The final display product of this recorder is very much like the equivalent to that of a wide screen TV. There is plenty of internal hard disk space storage available with room for up to 2 SATA units. I like the graphical user interface (GUI) or on screen display (OSD) menu. It offers a multitude of user programmable functions including motion detect recording and email alert notifications via the Internet. In fact I can control and monitor the entire system if I want by using only my iPhone. Considering the fact that this is a Security Camera King DVR, and it comes with a 3 year warranty, I'm confident that this recorder is going to last a while.
