8 Channel Federal Mini Series 960H Security DVR
Review by Everett, Jack (Tennessee USA) on Sep 29, 2014
Do I like it? Yeah, you bet and at only $60 more than the 8 Channel D1 recorder, I think it is definitely worth it. The recorder might be called a mini but the video resolution is not at 960H format (928 X 480 pixels). Not only is the display a higher resolution than my last DVR but this machine can pump out a higher bit rate which results in a truly better video. Actually I've had a few DVRs in the past, all with Windows operating systems and crashes and blue screens weren't infrequent and viruses were a concern when I hooked them into the Internet. This is my first Linux based machine. I was a little leery about the Linux operating system only because I'm not very familiar with it, but it doesn't really matter anyway because it runs in the background under the On Screen Operating system which is what you will interface with. No crashes or problems thus far (4 months out). The works well and I have had no problems with it. To me, if you use the newer 800TVL sensor cameras, this format is almost as good as the lower end megapixel systems, but generally at a much cheaper price. I also use a PTZ camera with this unit and it works fine. Controlling it from the DVR (or by the USB mouse) is easy and it eliminates the need for a separate bulky PTZ joystick controller. The manual looks like it was translated from Chinese to English by a 3rd year language major, but Security Camera King does offer work arounds with their online information and their technical support. I haven't seen this kind of compensation for the owner's manual limitations on other websites quite like I have here. The machine itself is quiet, doesn't produce a lot of extra heat, and the videos are clear, crisp, and have a lot of detail whether you are viewing daytime color recordings or infrared mode black and white recordings. I would recommend this unit.

Since I was basically purchasing a a whole new video security system with the new cameras that have the 960H compatible sensor, I figured I would spend a little extra on the DVR and purchase the 8 Camera Federal Mini. I'm very satisfied with my purchase as the DVR functions extremely well and I do like the little extra screen size in the "wide format" display. We do have a PTZ camera and the DVR handles it with ease (we control it via the RS485 connection). The unit seems fairly quiet and once we set everything up using the DVR's on-board On Screen Display menu system, we basically haven't had to touch it, but I know it is there if I ever need it.

Excellent 8 channel recorder in a 960H format. Playback options are helpful making it easy to find what you are looking for. Videos are sharp, clear and resolute. The DVR is loaded with options that I didn't really think I needed, but after realizing that I now had the capability, I made use of them (such as the alarms.) Even though this DVR records 8 cameras at 960H simultaneously, the 2 SATA internal Hard Drives can hold enough information for most purposes I would think (it works for me at any rate.) Considering the fact that the DVR maxes out at 8 channels simultaneously at 960H and 30 frames per second, has a ton of useful features, and an included basic 3 year warranty, I don't think you can beat the price.
