Complete 16 Camera Elite Mini NVR Security Camera Surveillance System
Review by Sam Tompkins on Sep 26, 2014
Cameras capture great. NVR records high quality high definition video. The 16 port power supply switch eliminates the need for external power supplies and works great. Everything seems solid and of good quality. No complaints.

I placed my order with Security Camera King on line on a Monday and received this at my office on Thursday morning. Impressive response and shipping. No damages, everything was in perfect condition, there were no "culls" (products that didn't work).

We went to work right away installing the system using the materials provided in the kit. For those of you who maybe new to this sort of thing like I was, other items you may require are CAT5 Ethernet cable fasteners to fasten cables to walls, ceilings, etc., surge protector strips (not only to provide power to the NVR but for any accompanying equipment like a monitor, POE switch, etc.). Also, be prepared to test out each individual camera once it is mounted, because I am sure you will want to make fine adjustments to aim, etc. I found the most helpful method for doing this to run the cables and connect the POE switch and NVR to get the system up and running. Then install the remote access app on my smartphone and use it as a monitor for each camera to complete the final mounting/installation and adjusting.

As for the system, the security video is extremely clear and detailed with good color and the infrared mode in darkness or at night time is just as sharp as the color mode during the daytime. Images of grainy, unclear video conjure up in your mind like the ones you are used to seeing on TV news shows but forget that! These videos are like watching a DVD or TV. All the components of the system work well and use a relatively small amount of resources on the network. I am very happy with the performance and the outcome. Security Camera King will remain my future video security shopping site.

The vandal domes and the bullet cameras used in this system are 1.3 megapixel cameras. They are basic IP network type cameras with fixed lenses. They do an excellent job capturing high definition video both during the day and in infrared mode during the night.

The NVR has the fundamental necessities to get the job done without a lot of extra features (especially due to its size) such as room for many internal disk drives for video storage and an internal DVD burner. Don't be mistaken though, because it's not like the unit doesn't offer an alternative or work around. For example there are two separate USB 2.0 ports. One port would usually always be occupied by the included USB mouse, but the other could be utilized for an external DVD burner or even another external storage drive. Before I get ahead of myself, I should mention that the NVR works very well, is very quiet, and produces little heat. The videos it records are very high quality high definition color (or black and white) pictures. Although this unit is marketed as a 16 channel NVR (which it is) the only resolution at which you will achieve a real time video rate of 30 frames per second for each channel is at a setting of D1 for all 16 channels (still somewhat better than D1 analog type video from a DVR but hardly worth the extra expense). However, I have found that a frame rate of 15 frames per second is very suitable for our purposes without too much disruption in the flow of the video. In that case you can actually use 16 channels at 720p resolution for that rate. Finally you can achieve 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second with this unit, but you will only be able to use 4 cameras. On the other hand, you can use 16 cameras set at a 1080p resolution but the frame rate will be reduced to only 7.5 frames per second. We've found the 720p to be the best compromise for use of all 16 channels using a 15 frame per second frame rate. The OSD on the NVR is pretty straight forward in use (if you can read and use a mouse, you can operate it) however, it may take a little time to get used to where the configuration settings are located in order to set the unit for the type of conditions and recording you want. The multi-user simultaneous remote user access is phenomenal and works very well.

Our hardware store is an old fashioned type hardware store in the middle of the city. I maintain a good customer base because, in fact we are more like the old fashioned hardware store and not a home improvement center. However, because we are a metropolitan store and we get many customers a day that we don't know, we installed a video security camera system about 15 years ago to help cut down on shoplifting. I believe just the mere presence of the cameras obviously seen by the customers is a powerful deterrent. However, if you really want to enforce a charge against someone you need proof, hence the video security system. The problem with the old system, besides being old, was that the resolution didn't come anywhere near as close Security Camera King's Complete 16 Camera Elite Mini system. In fact, now with such fine, detailed resolution, we can not only easily identify the face of an individual, but in most cases even identify the part they are holding.

My son and I installed the system on Saturday night and all day Sunday We are open on Saturday). We have a relatively high floating ceiling with fiberboard panels. We were able to mount the cameras using some supplies from the hardware store without any difficulty. Installing the switch and the cameras to the NVR was a little more involved I must say but my son was able to figure it out pretty well. I really like this new video security system and I think you will too.

I ordered the Security Camera King Complete 16 Camera Elite Mini NVR Security Camera Surveillance System on a Monday and was installing it by that same week's Friday. All parts and pieces of equipment arrived in excellent shape and there was absolutely no apparent damage in shipping. We started mounting cameras that Friday but didn't actually finish installing the entire unit until that following week. Mounting the cameras was basically as easy as hanging a picture. Routing the CAT5 Ethernet cables was a different story. Not that it would be anymore difficult to install 16 CAT5 Ethernet cables for computers or any other device, but the cable running was probably the most difficult portion of the install as we had to hand, clip, drill, and tuck cable to get it where we wanted, out of the way, and to the cameras from our NVR/PoE switch. I say "we" because I had a co-worker that helped with the installation, thankfully because without him and our two-way radios it seems like it may have taken forever to get all 16 cameras adjusted (aimed) properly after mounting. Once the initial installation was finished came the configuration setup, which wasn't really difficult. However, I have to be honest, I did call technical support and couple of times and they were the ones that made things seem to slide right into place.

As far as the quality of the system is concerned, it would be nice if the NVR could handle all 16 channels at 1080p and 30 frames per second but I guess that would be asking a lot, electronically. It can handle 720p for all 16 camera at 15 frames per second and that is what our system is currently set on. This frame rate may seem low since it is half the rate of real time (30 frames per second) the motion is still relatively decent and you have to remember that these megapixel systems produce a lot of data so if you can get by with 15 frames per second, you are storing half the amount of data as at 30 frames per second. Even with great compression utilities like H.264 that can be a tremendous help if you are recording a lot of footage. The video image is very clear, very colorful, and very distinct. WE are very pleased with the performance of the system. Security Camera King was more than helpful in getting us up and running with this system and therefore I can't rate them at anything less than five stars.

Well this system package certainly "threw" our company's security video system into the 21st century! This system is working out very well for us and was pretty easy to install. As our IT person for the office I didn't have much of a problem with the set up or configuration of the cameras, switch, and NVR. I must admit that I found some of the On Screen Display features to be rather interesting and very useful. Since I don't know much about video security camera systems, it did require some time investment on my behalf to learn what the NVR and cameras were capable of, but now I feel very confident about operating the system. There were no issues or conflicts with our network and the remote access feature for multiple users simultaneously works great. Thinking in terms of typical computer generated video, I really didn't think 6 TBs (yes, we ordered the max) would truly suit our needs for recording 16 megapixel cameras but it provides plenty of storage space without any problems. The recorded videos are very clear and detailed even at 720p (I'm thinking as compared to like 3 megapixels or more). Our office network is pretty elaborate and we do have a separate server room with frames so I made the equipment rack mountable. Actually, 100 foot lengths of CAT5 for all 16 cameras were fairly long for many of our cameras and not long enough for a couple of them. I have to confess that I am a "neat freak" so I either cut long cables short and crimped new RJ45s on them or used my own CAT5 for the long runs and put the jacks on them. I'll also add that I was happy to find that Security Camera King made their apps and management software available for free; you don't find that too often anymore these days. My rating is five stars.

I see from reading your reviews that a lot of other IT people get "hooked" with installing these network security systems for their companies. Most likely because when someone sees "network" if they aren't a network or computer person they shy away from it, but it truly isn't necessary because it is not that difficult to install and setup this system. In fact, I kind of enjoyed the project. Let me begin by saying first that we run all 1.3 megapixel cameras in 720p resolution mode at 15 frames per second. This works very well for us. The domes and the bullets seem to produce the same high quality video (I really can't tell the recording apart) with some really good detail and sharp pictures. We tended to use the domes inside and the bullets outside when we needed outdoor cameras. The switch works fine especially with the two Gigabit RJ45 uplink ports; it seems to handle data rates very well. We've rack mounted both in our small network frame. Set up and configuration on the network was pretty straightforward for me and I didn't have any problems. Aiming and adjusting the cameras in place was probably the most difficult part. We have no need for audio or the DVD burner so this Mini works fine for us. We use the motion activated recording and it saves us tons of internal hard drive storage space. The simultaneous remote access feature works just fine and we have had no problems with anything.

All I can say is "Wow!" this package sure does take video security camera systems to a whole new lever! I was speaking to a Security Camera King sales representative the other day that suggested this package system. I checked out local installation companies and their prices were just too high for me. Not that I fault them but I need a good system for my business and I am capable of installing it, so I could save the money I would normally spend on installation and invest it in better equipment. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I don't have an elaborate office network or server room but we do have our own Internet provider and a make shift network based on it. Security Camera King assured me that this package system would be easy to connect and set up, but I must admit, I was very wary. As it turns out it was. All I really had to do after mounting the cameras was plug them into the Ethernet cables and plug them into the back of the NVR. After connecting it to the Internet it was ready to go. Now I'm having fun "playing" with the On Screen Display (OSD) menu system learning the different things I can do with the cameras and the NVR. This is an excellent system and I would highly recommend it.
