Complete 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy DVR Security Camera Surveillance System
Review by Gerald Hautcamp on Apr 30, 2013
I am the maintenance supervisor here at our medical clinic and recently the doctors decided to purchase a security camera system for the exterior of the building. I had nothing to do with the purchase, but I was asked if I could install the system. I do all sorts of tasks here from electrical to custodial so I told them I would give it a try. When they purchased the Security Camera King 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy system while upgrading the system by adding a hard drive and the 700 TVL 2.8 - 12 mm Indoor/Outdoor IR dome cameras. To start off, the system was very easy to install; anyone can do it with very little knowledge about security camera installations. The cameras were very easy to mount (we have large eaves that surround the building and the cameras mounted nicely under those eaves), just a few screws and the cable run is all it took. I'm not sure about the standard 6000 TVL cameras that come with the package but these 700 TVL varifocal IR cameras are excellent. They're great for novices like me because the varifocal lens allows you to adjust the video picture after the camera has been mounted and the cameras have on screen display controls that can be used to set a variety of features that contribute to making your video shot even better. The DVR works great; we record in CIF resolution at 30 frames per second and it works just fine. Should we ever need to make copies, we have purchased a large USB Flash drive to down load the video footage to and we'll just take that to on of our office computers and burn a DVD of it. We have the DVR set up at the receptionist's desk where she can monitor the cameras throughout the day on her VGA monitor. Each of the doctors has your app downloaded and is able to access the system when they are away by using their smartphones. I like this system so much, and the price was low enough, I bought one for my home!
Complete 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy DVR Security Camera Surveillance System

My wife and I have both just recently retired and I can't believe I waited until now to install a security camera system. One of the reasons why I have opted to do so is because now that we are retired, we do a lot of traveling around the country to visit with our children and grandchildren. Using Security Camera King's 8 channel Elite Mini Economy system let's me keep track of things while we are on the road without it resulting in a giant debit to our retirement account. In fact, I never knew about this before, but my homeowner's insurance company gave me a discount on my house insurance now that I have the system installed. Since I am retired and my objective was to obtain a security camera system at the lowest possible price, I installed the system myself. I almost bit on purchasing what appeared to be a "similar" system at Sam's Club because it was considerably cheaper but now I'm glad I didn't. Although I haven't actually owned the other system it was on display at Sam's and I can tell you that Security Camera King's 8 channel Elite Mini Economy has more features and greater quality overall than that one. I went with the recommended Security Camera King components and a hard drive that would give me enough storage for up to two weeks (we're usually not gone any longer than that at one time). We do have smartphones on a plan left over from our "working days" and I am glad because I can use them to access our system when we our away. I actually have my system set up for intermittent recording, that is the camera's start recording when they sense motion detection, which saves me tons of hard drive space versus continuous recording. Also, I have the DVR set so that when we are away, if a camera detects any motion, the DVR will send me an e-mail so I can check it out on my smartphone. The system was fairly easy to install, the most difficult part being the cable runs. The cameras work great and the 600 TVL resolution is detailed enough for me. When the cameras initiate recording, I do record at CIF resolution at 30 frames per second and that works great for me too. We have a large screen LCD TV and it has a VGA input on it so I have connected the DVR to it and use it as my monitor when I am at home. The DVR even comes with its own USB mouse and infrared remote control. Although the unit is too small to hold a DVD burner, I haven't had the occasion to need one yet anyway, and if I do, I'll just transfer a copy of the video files to my computer and burn a DVD from there. Would I recommend this system to others? Well, my answer is yes, and I already have. In fact, I can't believe AARP doesn't endorse this system.

If you are looking for a good 8 channel system and you are willing to settle for CIF recording on all channels, I think this one will do. You can get larger D1 recording resolution on all 8 channels at once, but you will have to sacrifice the frame rate (down to 7 frames per second) to do so. For some applications I suppose that would not be a problem, but for mine, I prefer the real time frame rate instead. I have to say though, CIF resolution doesn't give you the best recording size or detail at all. As for the quality of this system, initially it seems good. The cameras are pretty steadfast and the DVR has a lot of different features, even for a "Mini Economy" version. I'm glad that even though it is the mini economy version you can still gain remote access to the DVR via the Internet. This DVR only gives you two video display options (VGA and BNC) as compared to a third, HDMI, found in the full size unit. That's not too much of a problem here since this system doesn't record audio and you're only looking at a CIF resolution anyway. The motions detection/e-mail notification system works good without too many false alarms and does a good job of letting you know that something's up. You can switch to remote monitoring on your smartphone afterwards to view the camera that is actually picking up the movement. The system is a little pricey, but I went with this one anyway on a recommendation from a friend. Because of the price, I rated it at three stars. I'll give it some time to see how it works and if it continues to work without any problems I'll probably come back later and upgrade my rating.

Not a bad combo system. Let's start with the cameras. They are 600 TVL color resolution cameras with about a 50 foot infrared range in total darkness. Everything on them is automatic. Any settings or features and even the switching of the infrared mode and the infrared LEDs is automatic. They come with a fixed 3.6 mm wide angle lens. The cameras are easy to mount, but if you are looking to zoom or narrow your shot, forget it, you'll have to upgrade to the more expensive varifocal lens cameras. However, when compared to many other systems this isn't unusual. The resolution varies among vendors but as the competition increases more and more are dropping the old 420 TVL cameras and offering 600 TVL or better. The DVR is a high quality piece of electronic equipment that I think is difficult to beat for competitors in the industry. The description page (at least at the time when I wrote this review) has an error on it that states the DVR comes with an automatic full 3 year warranty. It doesn't. It comes with a 1 year warranty. You only have two options for monitors with this unit, VGA and BNC but quite frankly, so many people make use of remote access through Internet features that most of the time they are monitoring with their computer or smartphones anyway. The DVR records in CIF resolution on all channels simultaneously at a rate of 30 frames per second. You can step it up to D1 but you'll have to sacrifice frame rate down to 7 frames per second to do so. The DVR's On Screen Display (OSD) or Graphical User Interface (GUI) is pretty intuitive and easy to use. It can be controlled by the buttons on the DVR, the included USB mouse, or the included infrared remote control. It comes with a pretty comprehensive remote access/Internet feature that can send e-mails to you when alarm triggers are tripped (like motion detection for example) and as I said before, you can access the DVR and cameras remotely from just about anywhere there is Internet access. If you're satisfied with he resolution options available with this system, I think you'll be pretty happy with it.

I'm a certified electrician so I thought I could install my own security camera system and save myself a lot of money and I was definitely right. I estimate that by purchasing the Complete 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy DVR Security Camera Surveillance System and installing it myself I saved at least a minimum of $3,000! The best part is that you don't have to be a electrician or some sort of technician to install it, it's that easy! I bought my system to use for my home and my business building next door. I ordered the 3 Terabyte hard drive and upgraded the cameras to the 700 TVL 2.8 - 12 mm Indoor/Outdoor IR Domes. I am so glad I upgraded the cameras because they not only made camera installation easier but they improved several of my shots so I got just exactly what I wanted in my field of view. For a "Mini Economy" the DVR is pretty amazing too. I have a Windows XP computer with a VGA LCD monitor and I just disconnected the monitor from the computer and hooked it up to the DVR until I got my system set up. Then I removed the monitor and put it back on my computer. The system can operate without a monitor once it is set up and you can still continue to monitor it by using Security Camera Kings Video Management Software (PSS) or by down loading their free applications to your smartphone, tablet, or whatever. The system is a "good fit" for me because I don't need to bear the expense of a DVD burner (I just make copies if I need them with my 32 gig USB thumb drive), I don't need a full time HDMI type monitor (I usually use m y computer or my phone), and the 3 Terabyte hard drive is more than plenty enough storage for me. I also don't need the alarm system (I've already got my own installed) nor do I need to record any audio, so this "Mini Economy" DVR helped me save some extra money too. By the way, the DVR comes with a USB mouse and an infrared remote control for operating the DVR if you don't want to use the buttons on the front panel or some other remote method. I have had the system installed now for about 4 months and I have had no problems with the cameras or the DVR. This is an excellent quality product and I will return to Security Camera King for any similar future purchases.

I think this is probably one of the better deals for the value and quality for 8 channel systems out there. If you are looking for a lot of room for internal storage however, you'll need to bump up a system or two. This mini also records in real-time at CIF resolution. If your preference leans more to the frame rate than the video recording resolution than you'll be very satisfied with this unit. On the other hand if your looking for something that is a little higher in video recording resolution, but still want to maintain the 30 frame per second rate than the Elite Mini is not for you. It can record on all channels at D1 but only at a frame rate of 7 frames per second. However, the price is hard to beat, especially for all the features that the DVR does have. You sacrifice an HDMI video output as well as sound for this unit, but if you don't need those things it is senseless to pay the money for something you won't be using. Even though this is a "Mini" unit it can still be remotely accessed via an Internet connection be it computer smartphone or similar device. In addition it has a good e-mail notification system based on motion detection for example that can alert you when there is someone within your recording zone. Don't worry about not having a DVD burner to make back ups or copies. If you have a personal computer with a burner and a USB thumb drive you can still copy your files to the thumb drive to transfer to your computer or you can even use FTP. I'd rate this at a little over four stars but not enough to push it to five so I have given it a four star rating.
My brother in law and I both decided to purchase an 8 channel security camera system. We both did some shopping around locally and didn't like what we saw for the price. In addition, to have the system installed be a security camera installer was too expensive. So, we started searching the Internet. A colleague of mine at work referred me to Security Camera King when we were talking about my potential system. So along with many other sites, I checked this one out too. I never knew it, but there are actually several sites that specialize in selling just security surveillance cameras and systems. I saw many sites where the prices were much cheaper than Security Camera King and some where they were more expensive. Nonetheless, I decided to go with Security Camera King, partly because of what I saw and partly because of the recommendation from my colleague. My brother in law bought a "Zmodo" brand system. Boy am I glad I purchased mine from Security Camera King. My system has far higher quality then his and you can tell just by the manufacture and design that his is a cheap knockoff. Although both vendors' DVRs don't automatically come with a hard disk drive, at least you can order yours installed from Security Camera King. My brother in law's web seller didn't even sell hard drives. He got his "kit" and had to wait to use it until he could order a DVR hard drive and install it himself. His system was much cheaper but now I see why. In addition to having to hunt down a hard drive for the DVR, his cameras were only 420 TVL - no comparison to my 600 TVL. His DVR like Security Camera King's DVR can be controlled by a USB mouse or an infrared remote control. His DVR had to be controlled this way, because there are no controller buttons on the front of the DVR unit! His system came with a warranty, but you had to pay extra for the warranty. Trust me, stick with Security Camera King, their top notch high quality professional systems all the way!
Who Says An Average Homeowner Can't Afford An 8 Channel System?

I'm not a wealthy CEO nor am I a celebrity with a $5 million home, I'm just an average, middle class homeowner with a family. When I grew up, no one locked their front doors in town, it just wasn't necessary. Today however, it's a different story and to take it one step further you need to protect your home, family, and belongings. Security Camera Kings Complete 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy DVR Security Camera Surveillance System lets me do that with the camera coverage that I need. A four channel system would be nice because of the cheaper price, but it doesn't afford the camera coverage that I need. I have a home with a detached garage and I want to make sure all the areas surrounding my home, including a closer shot of the front door are covered. This system gives me the opportunity to do that and I didn't have to pay thousands of dollars for it either. What's more I saved a tremendous amount of money by doing two things: 1) I installed the entire system myself; and 2) I used my own main LCD big screen TV as the monitor so I didn't have to purchase a new one. If you're questioning whether you can afford this system perhaps the best thing to do is to ask yourself (like I did), "Can I not afford to get this system?" My wife and I both feel more secure and comfortable while we are in our home and while we are away, thanks to the remote accessing feature of the DVR. Its a good product and everything but some small hardware is included. It is definitely worth 5 stars.

They say you get what you pay for and as a CCTV installer I can tell you that you really get a nice quality "mini" DVR in this system. The eight 600 TVL resolution infrared cameras are a pretty good deal too. These cameras are all 3.6 mm wide angle lens that are great for overview shots but if you want something up close or cameras with on screen display menus that can control additional electronic features you should consider upgrading them. The DVR records realtime (30 frames per second) CIF resolution display for each channel simultaneously however, if you don't mind the reduced frame rate of 7fps it can even record D1 size resolution for every channel. The On Screen Display (OSD) is intuitive so navigation is not very difficult and it doesn't take much time until you get used to the navigation whether you are a seasoned installer or a first time novice. The unit is too small to hold a hard drive and a DVD burner but if you need to make back up copies of video footage from the hard drive you can still use a USB flash drive. You can then transfer the files to a computer and save and/or burn them on a DVD there. This system also has good remote access features from the Internet and you can download Security Camera King's free apps for your smartphones, iPad, or computer. This is an economical system but it doesn't skimp on quality.
