Infrared or IR cameras can produce black and white images in total darkness.  They do this by projecting an infrared light from around the camera lens at the target area.  This light is invisible to the human eye but is the equivalent of a spotlight to the IR sensor in the camera.  These cameras are excellent for use in monitoring nursery rooms and other indoor rooms at night, dark driveways, garages, and other areas that have no existing light.

There are also security/surveillance cameras that have a pan, tilt, and/or zoom function.  These cameras have the ability to move sideways, up and down, and telescopically zoom in on activity, all automatically if needed.  These are excellent for monitoring large areas such as large yards, farm land, and other large places.

Digital video is basically many digital photographs taken within just one second.  This creates the illusion of motion and this is how motion pictures are created.  If you consider the size of a file for just one digital color photograph, it can be fairly large, so taking several digital photographs a second can add up to a really large file size in no time.  This is where the processor, capture board, or CODECs (CODEC is an acronym for COmpression/DECompression) are needed.  They process the digital data gathered from the camera, then compress the digital file’s size so the digital file is much smaller without sacrificing the quality of the video.

Finally, the processor sends the final digital file to the DVR.  A home Cctv camera system DVR is actually the same thing as the hard drive on a personal computer.  It stores the digital file continuously until the hard drive is full and then re-records new video from the beginning.  If necessary, data can usually be copied to another device if needed for distribution.

Motion video can be created with as few as 12 photographs (also known as “frames) taken every second up to as many as 30 frames per second or fps. Once you have finished recording, pull out the easy-to-remove SD card and download the digital video files right to your personal computer where you can view, copy, and/or archive the files. For some computers without a multi-media card reader, you may be required to purchase one of these for your computer.

But that’s not all! The included miniature DVR is more that just a recording device, it can play back the files as well. If you don’t have a computer, you can still view your captured color digital video by using the included RCA cable to connect the unit to your television.

Security Flood Light DVR Camera

Nothing says “”Gotchya!” to a potential intruder, vandal, or burglar better than a security flood light DVR camera. Thanks to modern technological improvements these devices are an entire compact digital video security system. They can be used in both residential and commercial applications and can be extremely effective when placed in the proper location.

Not only does a security flood light DVR camera help to protect and prevent perpetrators from causing damage or breaking and entering, but it also offers positive deterrence. It’s already been proven by the law enforcement agencies in London, England and New York City that the mere presence of digital video cameras deters criminal activity.

However, the security flood light DVR camera takes it one step further. Not only does it record still digital photographs or digital video images of the intruder, but once the unit senses motion, it snaps on a powerful high wattage flood light illuminating the surrounding area and “spotlighting” the intruder as well.

Before we provide some detail about the design and function of a standard security flood light DVR camera, let’s briefly describe a typical digital video security camera system and how it works.

Most standard digital video security camera systems contain one to several cameras, a Digital Video Recorder or DVR, and perhaps a monitor. The cameras are mounted in various strategic locations and send their digital video data to the DVR unit by means of a digital video cable run from each camera to the unit, or wirelessly using radio signal transmitters and receivers.

The DVR unit, much like a highly specialized personal computer, contains a hard disk drive like those found in computers. The DVR unit processes the digital data and creates a digital video file that can be viewed live on a monitor and/or saved on the DVR for later use.

A security flood light DVR camera is basically a miniature version of the basic system without the monitor. The unit contains all the devices (sans the monitor) within one relatively small, compact fixture. The floodlight is usually a powerful 500 watt halogen flood lamp. These lights can project a powerful beam of light in a relatively wide field of vision.

Connected to the light, DVR, and the camera is an infrared motion detector. The motion detector, known as a PIR or Passive InfraRed sensor, can detect the infrared radiation emitted by the objects in its field of vision. When this “heat signature” changes greatly or rapidly, the sensor interprets this as motion. The sensor activates a relay that switches the security flood light, DVR, and camera on. Depending on the model, the entire unit switches off either after motion is no longer detected or specified time period after the initial “On” state.

When the camera is switched “on” it immediately begins capturing digital video images (or stills), with the flood light helping to provide a crisp, clear, bright picture. An on board processing chip saves the data either as digital photographs or digital video files to the DVR.

The DVR in this case is not a large hard disk drive, but usually consists of an SD card (Secured Digital card), a compact flash card, thumb drive or similar mini-portable memory device. All the user needs to do is remove the SD card, transfer the files to their personal computer and view, print, or make movies disks of the saved data.

Although a security flood light DVR camera cannot provide the extensive precise coverage of a full size standard digital video security system, it does offer an economical alternative and can be quite useful for specific situations. Security Cameras Monitoring Systems

Some of the most popular items used for protection and surveillance today are security cameras monitoring systems. These systems take advantage of the latest and greatest in both electronic and computer technology making them incredibly powerful and versatile to use. In addition to deterring burglary and/or vandalism, security cameras monitoring systems offer you the peace of mind of knowing that your business, residence, or loved ones are okay.

Most security cameras monitoring systems are component systems; that is, parts of the system may differ in function (i.e. one camera may have Pan-Tilt-Zoom or PTZ and another may not) or may be made by different manufacturers (i.e. the cameras may be produced by one manufacturer while the DVR is produced by another). Regardless of the differences between components, all of the separate parts can work together to create a functional and effective security camera monitoring system.

Security cameras monitoring systems work in the following manner. The digital video camera “captures” a light image and transfers it into an electrical image. This electrical based image is sent in the form of electronic data to the DVR or Digital Video Recorder. The DVR normally contains a special type of computer processor known as a Digital Signal Processor or DSP. The DSP compiles the data from the video camera and creates a digital video file of the data which can e stored on the DVR or viewed in real time (live) on a monitor.

The DSP normally uses a COmpression/DECompression or CODEC utility to make the digital video file smaller without sacrificing quality. This is necessary because digital video files are comprised of thousands of digital photographs. In fact, they are digital photographs, but they are taken at a high rate of speed, usually around 30 photographs or Frames Per Second or 30 FPS.

This means that for every one second of video, the file will contain the equivalent of data for 30 individual digital photographs. As you can see, the file can get very large in a hurry so a CODEC is a vital and necessary tool.

The security cameras monitoring system may also include a CD/DVD writer, SD card writer, or accommodate a USB thumb drive for archiving files or for providing copies of files on a portable media to police, insurance agencies, etc.

There are a variety of optional features available for digital video security cameras however it may be easier to differentiate between cameras if they are categorized first, based on two of these features. The first criteria to use for categorizing the cameras can be the shape of the camera itself. There are three basic shapes or types:
• Box shaped cameras;
• Bullet shaped cameras; and,
• Dome cameras.

Box shaped cameras look just like the name implies; they are rectangular shaped to resemble a small box. These cameras may be mounted on walls, ceilings, and other structures. Bullet shaped cameras are elongated and rounded in shape on the ends to resemble a bullet-type structure. They may also be mounted on walls, ceilings and other structures. Finally, dome shaped cameras are usually flush mounted on ceilings with a rounded dome protrusion just big enough to allow for the camera lens.

The second criteria for categorizing digital video security cameras is whether they are designed for indoor use, outdoor use, or both. Indoor use only cameras cannot be used outdoors because they may be damaged by exposure to dust, water, and other debris. Outdoor security cameras monitoring systems or indoor/outdoor cameras are enclosed in a protective case that allows the camera to function properly but prevents entry (ingress) of dust, water and other matter.

Many outdoor cameras will be certified according to the protection the enclosure provides using a International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard called an Ingress Protection code or IP rating. This code consists of two digits; the first digit represents protection from dust and the second digit represents protection from liquids. The first digit of the rating ranges from 0 to 6 and the second digit ranges from 0 to 8, the higher number indicating a greater rate of protection. An IP65 rating for example, means the enclosure is dust tight and provides protection from water projected by a nozzle against the enclosure from any direction.

DVR and Security Camera Systems

What is the relationship between a DVR and security camera systems? Is DVR necessary in a security camera system? What kinds of DVRs are there? Are there substitutes for DVRs? What is a DVR anyway?
Let’s examine a basic digital video security camera system and how it operates. Afterwards, we’ll be able to answer some of the specific questions related to the DVR and security camera systems.

A basic digital video security camera system is a component system that consists of three major components:
1) One to many cameras;
2) A DVR or Digital Video Recorder; and,
3) A monitor or monitors

The system operates in the following manner. The digital video camera converts light energy into electrical energy which can be measured and is used to create digital video data. This data is sent to the DVR. As previously mentioned, the DVR is a digital video recorder, just like the hard disk drive or HDD of a personal computer. However, in security camera systems, the DVR normally contains a processor, just like the processor in a Personal Computer or PC.

However, the processor in a DVR is a highly specialized piece of electronic circuitry. Unlike the PC processor, the security camera DVR processor is manufactured to handle specific functions of security camera systems such as digital video file production, camera control, and recording of digital video files. It uses a specific utility called a COmpression/DECompression or CODEC program to process the digital video file from the digital video data sent to it by the video camera.

Digital video is basically nothing more than a series of rapid digital photographs taken in rapid succession. Typically, high quality digital video is about 30 digital photographs taken within on second, also referred to as 30 frames per second or 30 fps. When you think of the file size from just one high quality digital photograph, you can imagine how enormous a digital video file that takes 30 fps for 24 hours could be.

That’s why the DVR’s processor uses a CODEC to create the digital video file. It uses special programming that shrinks the size of the file without sacrificing the high quality of the image. CODECS change from time to time as different approaches and technologies make each CODEC better and more efficient. One of the most popular and recent CODECs is called the H.264 CODEC.

The DVR and security camera system create, process, and store digital video files that can be viewed instantly (live) on monitors or stored for later viewing on monitors or for archiving. Many DVRs also have additional storage options such as CD/DVD writers or USB Flash drive connectivity to copy portions of video to portable media. This may be necessary to give insurance companies, police departments, as evidence, etc.

The DVR may also contain other specialized features. One common feature of many modern DVRs is internet connectivity. The DVR may contain its own web server technology and programming so that it may be connected to any broadband internet service and instantly become accessible anywhere in the world there is broadband internet accessibility.

Most DVR and security camera systems come in 4, 8, or 16 channels. This means that the DVR can handle 4, 8, or 16 separate camera inputs at one time. Security systems requiring more than 16 cameras simply use additional DVRs to expand the number of cameras needed.

Highly specialized security cameras may have highly specialized DVRs. Portable systems, systems that are used for a small amount of time, systems that have self contained cameras and DVRs all in one unit may utilize different digital storage methods for the DVR. For example school bus DVR and security camera systems often use a Compact Flash Card or similar portable storage medium instead of a full sized hard disk drive as the DVR.

Is a DVR necessary in a security camera system? No, not necessarily, but a system with just a monitor and no DVR will not be able to record the video so that it may be reproduced for later use. A baby monitor is usually a good example of this. On the other hand, a retail store facility would not realize the full potential of protection without a DVR and security camera system.

Other DVR and security camera systems functions pertaining to the DVR may include audio recording, various output display resolutions as well as connectors, remote control, e-mail and smartphone notification, and mouse and/or keyboard control.
