Most of today’s digital security/surveillance cameras are so sensitive that they can capture images not only in broad daylight, but in situations where there is very little available light.  These cameras are called day/night cameras and they contain a very sensitive electronic chip that allows them to function in conditions with low light.  On the other hand, if you need a security/surveillance camera that can “see” in total darkness, those are available too.

Infrared or IR cameras can produce black and white images in total darkness.  They do this by projecting an infrared light from around the camera lens at the target area.  This light is invisible to the human eye but is the equivalent of a spotlight to the IR sensor in the camera.  These cameras are excellent for use in monitoring nursery rooms and other indoor rooms at night, dark driveways, garages, and other areas that have no existing light.

There are also security/surveillance cameras that have a pan, tilt, and/or zoom function.  These cameras have the ability to move sideways, up and down, and telescopically zoom in on activity, all automatically if needed.  These are excellent for monitoring large areas such as large yards, farm land, and other large places.

Digital video is basically many digital photographs taken within just one second.  This creates the illusion of motion and this is how motion pictures are created.  If you consider the size of a file for just one digital color photograph, it can be fairly large, so taking several digital photographs a second can add up to a really large file size in no time.  This is where the processor, capture board, or CODECs (CODEC is an acronym for COmpression/DECompression) are needed.  They process the digital data gathered from the camera, then compress the digital file’s size so the digital file is much smaller without sacrificing the quality of the video.

Finally, the processor sends the final digital file to the DVR.  A home Cctv camera system DVR is actually the same thing as the hard drive on a personal computer.  It stores the digital file continuously until the hard drive is full and then re-records new video from the beginning.  If necessary, data can usually be copied to another device if needed for distribution.

Today’s Digital Video Recorder or DVR security camera systems are an amazing bundle of new high quality technology.  The security camera industry can also thank the personal computer industry as a contributor, because a lot of today’s DVR security camera systems use recently invented technology borrowed from the computer industry.

In this article we are going to describe how a typical DVR security camera system works.

Modern digital video security and surveillance systems are basically component systems.  This means that essentially, the parts of the system are like plug n play items used in computers.  All of the components do not have to be made by one manufacturer, they can differ in function and still work on the system, and they can usually be removed and replaced with something else and the system will continue to work.

This provides tremendous versatility in application because the DVR security camera systems are no longer required to use all of the same components.  For example, an 8 channel system may have 6 bullet cameras and 2 Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera made by a totally different manufacturer.

 

Let’s take a closer look at how a DVR security camera system (and its individual components) works.  The first component of the system is the camera.  There are so many different type of cameras available today that we do not have the space for this article to cover them all.  Instead, let look at how they work

DVR security cameras possess one primary function; transfer the reflecting light that is in its field of vision into electrical impulses that can be measured, manipulated, and compiled to create a digital video file.  This information is then sent to the DVR and/or monitor for processing and viewing.

The camera does this by using one of two different electronic sensor chips called a Charged Coupled Device or CCD or a Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor or CMOS.  Although both sensors work a little differently, the both yield the same end product–the electrical data that can be used to create a digital video file.

This is accomplished by the camera’s lens focusing the field of view onto one of these chips, which generally range from only 1/4″ to 1/2″ square.  When the light strikes the sensor chip, small electrical impulses are created by the pixels in the chip.  Each one can be measured and used to create the data that will be used to display the cameras field of view as a digital video.

At this point the signal is still an analog type signal.  The camera sends this analog data through an analog-to-digital processor chip to convert the data into digital or binary format.  The camera also contains a Digital Signal Processor or DSP chip that is used to make fine adjustments to the data.  Once the digital information is ready it is sent via a video transmission cable or other means to the DVR, hence the name DVR security camera systems.

Once the signal reaches the DVR, it applies its own DSP technology along with a CODEC utility.  Codec is an acronym for COmpression/DECompression.  This utility program uses a special algorithm program that reduces the incredibly large file into just a fraction of its original size without sacrificing significant quality.  Once this is accomplished the digital video file is compiled and is saved on the DVR’s hard disk drive and/or displayed on a system monitor.

It should be easy to see now why DVR security camera systems benefit from technological improvement in the computer world.  Many PC based devices are used in security camera systems.  For example, the DVR saves the digital video file to its hard disk drive for storage.  USB Thumb drives can be used to update firmware and copy and transfer video footage.  DSP and memory chips are directly related to the computer industry.

Even the monitors used today are basically the same as computer monitors but they may include a few extra input options.  Monitors have gone from the bulky Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) type to the LCD type just like most computer monitors.

Hidden Camera In TV

Ever need to watch those who are watching? That’s exactly what a hidden camera in TV can do. In fact the possibilities for different types of hidden cameras are nearly endless these days, thanks to 21st century electronic technology.

The current technology that abounds is so compact and efficient, that a hidden camera in TV is rather simple, especially considering the fact that we currently have hidden color cameras that are made to look like the head of a typical Phillips screw. Putting a hidden camera in TV is easy because there is usually lots of spare room inside the television set case to allow for the camera and accompanying electronics. Who would suspect that the television is actually watching them?

Perhaps the real question here is not how they put a hidden camera in TV, a screw, a stuffed animal, a clock, or just about any other object but what is it about the technology that makes such a thing possible? In the following article we’ll describe how a miniature hidden camera works and mention some the technological improvements that have occurred over the past few years to make this possible.

There are two types of digital video security and monitoring, overt and covert. Overt monitoring occurs when no attempts to conceal, disguise, or hide the activity to monitor or record images are made. Covert monitoring is just the opposite; the camera and other equipment is hidden, concealed, or disguised so as not to readily reveal its presence. In the world of security and surveillance, both overt and covert monitoring is needed. Thus, the demand has created the need for a device like a hidden camera in TV.

Covert monitoring devices may include just the camera or it may include an entire miniature digital video security camera system. A typical full-size digital video security system not only has cameras, but a Digital Video Recorder or DVR and an optional monitor as well. Hidden miniature digital video security camera systems also include the camera, but in addition, contain a miniature DVR as well. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s talk about the technology that allows this to happen.

First a full-size standalone digital video system uses digital video cameras that send their digital video signals to the DVR unit. The DVR unit also contains a highly specialized computer processor called a Digital Signal Processor or DSP. The processor is like the processor in a personal computer but is designed to operate specifically to deal with digital video data. The DSP gathers the digital video data sent to it by the digital video camera and creates a digital video file that can be viewed live on a monitor and/or stored in a digital file format on a hard disk drive on the DVR.

Miniature systems, like a hidden camera in TV system, also have a camera and a DVR. However, the DVR circuitry is contained on a small Integrated Circuit (IC) chip and is either stored in on-board (another type of IC chip) memory or on an SD card or similar device. As technology improves, memory chips become smaller and smaller while their capacity for storage becomes greater. This is just one of the features that provides for making miniature digital video security systems possible.

As for the cameras, there are several technologies applied here to make the devices incredibly small while still yielding fluid, relatively high-quality video. First, many hidden, miniature digital cameras use a highly refined wide angle lens. This lens provides the camera with a significantly wide field of view even though the lens itself is often only 3.7 mm in diameter.

Next the electronic sensor chips used to convert the focused light reflected from the image through the lens can be incredibly small. Typical sizes for these sensors called Charged Coupled Devices or CCDs or Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductors or CMOSs is 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 inch square – and that is for full sized cameras.

Finally, as already mentioned IC chip technology continues to get smaller and more sophisticated over time. This allows for an analog-to-digital converter circuit and transmitting circuits to exist in miniature IC chips. So when all of these technological improvements are packaged neatly and tightly together, many covert recording devices are possible, including a hidden camera in TV.
