CCTV Digital System

Analog digital security provides adequate security and surveillance, but with the advent of the CCTV digital system there are far more beneficial features and options available. In fact there is a CCTV digital system for just about every security or surveillance situation.

A standard CCTV digital system is based on components. That means that individual devices (i.e. components) can usually be mixed and matched to adapt to a variety of uses to create the ultimate CCTV digital system. The three components, digital cameras, Digital Video Recorders or DVRs, and monitors provide the flexibility of versatile applications while maintaining the power and integrity of a single, complete and easily controllable system.

CCTV digital systems are expandable so they are great for both residential and commercial applications. CCTV digital system camera’s have a wealth of features and options to make them applicable to almost any application. In addition to the standard box, bullet, or dome shaped cameras CCTV digital systems can easily employ the use of covert video surveillance cameras such as hidden or disguised cameras. This is possible because the digital cameras can be manufactured in such incredibly small sizes.

In addition, the electronic sensor inside the camera that converts the light energy emitted by the objects in the camera’s field of view can also inherently detect near infrared radiation. In fact, most non-infrared cameras have an infrared filter over the sensor to block out the near infrared light. This inherent ability to detect infrared radiation makes the camera an excellent choice for night time or total darkness video monitoring applications. The camera’s sensor can detect the infrared light but it is invisible to the human eye.

Other optional features of CCTV digital systems include using the Internet for networking cameras or DVRS and for providing access to CCTV digital systems anywhere in the world that there is broadband Internet access and a suitable device (computer or smartphone).

CCTV digital systems can also have object tracking or following as part of the software that is supplied with either the DVR or Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras. Object tracking makes CCTV digital systems an excellent choice for commercial parking lots or for following individuals in open spaces.

Digital Video Recorders, like their analog ancestors the VHS or Beta video recorder, can store digital video files for later use or archiving, or can render them in real-time for live viewing. Unlike analog recording mediums, long-term digital storage media (CDs and DVDs for example) don’t allow the quality of the video image to degrade over time.

The third component of the CCTV digital system, the digital monitor, has also offered vast improvements over its analog ancestor the CRT monitor. Digital monitors can provide High Definition (HD) images or several camera images on just one monitor. In addition, these monitors are much lighter so they can easily be wall or ceiling mounted. Furthermore, they use a lot less power to produce their pictures than their older counterparts.

Finally, since every component of a CCTV digital system now operates based on digital data, many of the individual electronic parts of the system are the same parts used in the personal computer world. CCTV digital system cameras are similar to webcams; DVRs are similar to computer hard disk drives; and security monitors are similar to computer monitors.

This provides for an enormous advantage over older analog systems. Much of the equipment used in CCTV digital systems takes advantage of the vast technological advances that are made in the personal computing world. Not only do the systems reap the benefit of technological advances, but the systems themselves are much more versatile in use and are lower in price.

Camera Video Monitor

A camera video monitor is used to view either the field of vision being captured by one camera or by a series of cameras in a digital video security system. Digital video camera monitors have made great strides in technological improvements in the last several years producing a higher quality, lighter, and more adaptive piece of digital video security system equipment.

It’s important to understand a little about the history of camera video monitors in security camera systems and how they used to work compared to how they work today. Let’s take a closer look at a camera video monitor.

First, we should identify the three main components of a video security system. That includes one to several video cameras, a video recorder, and at least one camera video monitor. Note that the word “digital” did not appear in the previous two sentences because we are referring to the older analog video security camera systems.

The older analog video camera systems consisted of analog video cameras which were basically miniature version of cameras used in an average television studio. However, since television cameras “broadcasted” their signal to the general public, security video cameras were often (and still maybe today) referred to as Closed Circuit Television or CCTV. The circuit is closed because the security system camera sends its signal to the video recorder and monitor, a closed circuit, rather than broadcasting it for unrestricted access.

The recorders used in these older analog systems were usually analog video tape recorders such as a VHS or BETA recorder and the monitors were basically miniature televisions. In contrast we use digital video security cameras, Digital Video Recorders or DVRs and high resolution camera video monitors with LCD, Plasma, or LED displays today.

The older “tube” type television camera video monitor and the analog video camera, worked with video in terms of “lines of resolution.” Without getting overly technical, the quality of these displays was much lower than today’s typical Plasma, LCD, or LED camera video monitor since the tube projected the image in alternating “lines.” Today the image is made up of pixels, extremely small dots or squares that can provide a much greater (or finer) resolution, and therefore a much higher quality display image.

Often times, older analog cameras would require an individual camera video monitor for each camera. Today however, depending on the size and resolution of the display, all of the cameras within a system can be displayed on one monitor. In fact, the digital video security systems used today do not require a camera video monitor to operate. A monitor is used to set the system up initially, but may be removed after the initial settings have been made. Yet, the monitor is still the component with the highest use since it is used to view live or recorded video in one way or another.

Of the three types of camera video monitors used today, the LCD is the most prevalent. Since video security systems have become digital, they have gained access to many of the technological improvements of personal computers. Therefore, monitors that are currently used for personal computing may also be used for digital video security systems with one provision; the monitor must have the capability to display using the output connectors for the system.

Personal computer monitors typically have VGA (Video Graphics Array), DVI (Digital Video Interface), or HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connectors for video input. Security digital video cameras however still utilize RG-59 coaxial cable with a BNC (Bayonet Neill-Concelman) connector. Most computer display monitors do not have BNC inputs; most security camera video monitors DO have BNC inputs.

This is important because if you choose to place a monitor on a single or specific camera, chances are it will need a BNC input connector. While most DVRs have BNC connectors for the camera inputs, they usually have several different output types to the monitor (VGA, DVI, and HDMI for example). When you purchase a camera video monitor for your security system, just make sure the outputs of the cameras and/or DVR matches the input connections of the monitor.

Security System Devices

There are many security system devices. For the sake of this discussion, we’ll categorize security system devices into two separate groups, digital video security camera systems and non-video security camera systems. In the following article we’ll discuss what some of these devices are for both categories.

Our two arbitrary security system devices categories have both benefited by advanced electronic circuit and computer technologies. Improvements in these technologies have directly or indirectly influenced security system devices such that these devices more efficient and cheaper, and in some cases, has made owning a device possible when it wasn’t possible to do so in the past.

Digital Video Security System Devices

Digital video security systems generally consist of three basic components. While it’s true that there may be additional devices based on the user’s choice, nearly every system will contain or use each of these three components: They are 1) digital video cameras; 2) Digital Video Recorders or DVRs; and, 3) Monitors.

Digital video cameras can be further categorized into two types themselves, based on where they are used. Indoor cameras are used in situations where they are not exposed to weather and other outside elements. Outdoor cameras are enclosed in a protective case so they can withstand exposure to weather and the elements.

Both indoor and outdoor cameras have many features that allow them to be used as highly specialized security system devices. How they do this is outside the scope of this article, however we will list some of these devices according to the features that seem to qualify them as different types of security system devices:
• Wireless Cameras;
• Very light sensitive low-Lux day/night vision cameras;
• Night vision infrared cameras;
• Pan-Tilt-Zoom or PTZ cameras;
• Camera that record video and audio;
• Internet Protocol or IP ready cameras that can use the internet as a vehicle for networking; and
• Cameras with motion detector switching.

DVRs contain a Digital Signal Processor or DSP that reads the camera data and uses it to create a digital video file. This file is viewed on the monitor and or stored for later used on the DVR. Typically, the number of video inputs the DVR can handle at one time (also called “channels”) dictates the number of cameras in a one DVR unit system. If we consider different types of DVRs as security system devices, here is a list of some of the more common:
• Four, eight, and sixteen channel DVRs;
• DVR cards that use a personal computer as a DVR unit;
• Wireless DVRs;
• Internet Protocol (IP) ready DVRs; and,
• Miniature DVRs that use miniature storage media such as SD cards or thumb drives.

Monitors are used to view live video or recorded video. Most monitors today are color LCD monitors, just like the ones used for personal computing. Security system monitors may differ from typical computer monitors in the way they connect to the DVR or security camera. These DVRs may have additional connection types that may not be typical of computer monitors (such as BNC connectors).

Non-digital Video Security System Devices

The other category of security system devices is the non-digital video security system devices. For our discussion, this generally means security alarms. Most security alarm systems contain two major components, the sensors and the master control center/dialer.

The sensors are used as type of switch to monitor a particular state of an object such as being open, closed, or in motion. When the sensor has detected the desired trigger, it either closes a circuit with the master control panel or sends a wireless signal to the master control panel to notify it of the change. If we consider different alarm sensors as different security system devices then we can provide the following partial list:
• Door and window sensors;
• Temperature sensors;
• Humidity sensors;
• Poll sensors (detect the presence of someone or something);
• Motion detectors;
• Smoke and fire detectors;
• CO (carbon monoxide) and other chemical sensors;
• Light sensors; and,
• Sound sensors.

Master control panels coordinate the sensors and the alarms, including autodialing telephone numbers and playing a message to the receiving party, if equipped.

Security Camera Software

Security camera software is the glue that ties together digital video cameras and Personal Computers (PCs) or Macintosh Computers (Macs) as well as Digital Video Recorder (DVR) units for standalone systems. It’s also the heart of remote DVR monitoring applications (Apps) that allows your smartphone to access your video security system. It essence it provides the programming that allows you to control the camera, monitor the camera, and record the digital video files.

There are many types of security camera software. Perhaps the simplest to use is a typical web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox Mozilla, Google Chrome and others. For digital video security cameras and DVRs that are IP (Internet Protocol) ready, a web browser may be all that is needed to control, monitor, and record digital video security images.

Although it may be difficult to describe what security camera software is, we can easily describe what it isn’t. Security Camera Software is not firmware. Firmware is basically the drivers and internal commands that a device needs to communicate with processors and other devices. Firmware is device and manufacturer specific.

Security camera software is not Operating System (OS) software. Operating systems like Windows, Linux, Mac, and others provide the basis for central communication between devices, processors, and users. OS software is what makes a computer system work.

So where does that leave us with security camera software? As stated earlier it could be considered as a web browser, but typically security camera software is specific programming that is designed to operate a digital video security system. We can list the types of security camera software based on how they are designed to work. Security camera software can be:

• Designed to provide the control, monitoring and recording of security cameras and DVRs;
• Designed to allow PCs and Macs to provide the control, monitoring, and recording of security cameras when used in conjunction with a security video PCI card;
• Designed to provide the control, monitoring and recording of security cameras and DVRs that may be networked using the Internet (IP ready);
• As mentioned earlier, designed as Apps for Smartphones to allow them to monitor IP ready cameras; and
• Designed to integrate a variety of digital video capture devices such as webcams, netcams (or IP ready cams), computer PCI capture cards and computers to create a digital video security system.

The first type on our list is software that is normally provided when you purchase a standalone digital video security system with a DVR. The manufacturer of the DVR or the Cameras (or both) may provide the software that is normally installed on the DVR unit. This software is used to control camera functions such as Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) functions and timers that turn the cameras on and off.

The second type of security camera software on our list works with computers that use a PCI card. There are some digital video security systems that are specifically designed to work with your computer. For example Geovision brand PCI DVR cards provide inputs for multiple security cameras that connect to your computer. This system uses your computer’s hard drive as the DVR. The software that accompanies this card that allows the computer to control the cameras and store the digital video files is a type of security camera software.

Our third type applies specifically to IP ready digital video cameras, DVRs and servers, and systems. The software is normally produced by the manufacturer of the security system and is designed to allow a computer to control, monitor, and record security video using the network. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, it may be something as simple as a web browser, but it can also be a proprietary program produced by the security equipment manufacturer that is used to coordinate the video security system’s functions. These may also be in the form of browser plug-ins such as ActiveX subroutines that must be installed in the browser before it is used with the system.

The fourth type of security camera software is Smartphone Apps which we have already described.

The fifth and final type of security camera software allows you to use a variety of video capture devices (such as webcams or capture cards) in conjunction with your computer to create your own digital video system. While this does not create the ideal video security system, it does save money by allowing you to use equipment you have already purchased to create a digital video system.
