16 Channel Ultimate Mini Series D! Realtime Security DVR
Review by Giroud, Henry (Missouri USA) on Jun 28, 2014
This unit costs about half as much as the full size unit and it is worth every penny of it. Security Camera King obviously trimmed away some of the "extras" (fat) and left a "leaner and cleaner" DVR. Actually, it works great! The recorded videos are great with clear, crisp pictures that have vivid color. The only possible realistic downfall I can see to the mini unit as compared to the full size one is the fact that there is less room for additional internal hard disc drives for storage. But then again, you know that going in, and you can still max out the storage to two hard drives with 4 TB each for a grand total of 8 TBs of storage. Another big plus is the remote access feature. Basically, once you connect this DVR to your network, or in my case my broadband Internet, it's like having your own little security video server. I can monitor or adjust the recorder using my PC or even my smartphone and not only that, but so can my co-workers as well. The software and apps that Security Camera King makes available are very easy to install, and they are totally FREE! I've seen many dealers that charge a downloading fee or even a yearly licensing fee, which I think is nonsense. When I look at how Security Camera King has laid out their online catalog, offered the types of equipment at the savings they do while still maintaining high quality standards, I just can't see how you can go anywhere else. Great DVR and company as well.

Excellent piece of equipment for someone that wants to record a lot of cameras but doesn't need all the alarm, audio, and other extras. Even though the data storage could be high (16 cameras at D1 resolution all recording at 30 frames per second can add up) there is still room for two internal hard disk drives and if you use the record on motion detection function these will more than fulfill your needs. I've been purchasing my supplies from Security Camera King for over 5 years now. I like the products and the customer service.

This is a very good DVR. The videos are clear and resolute, color accurate and fluid. No missed frames, no crashes, or any of that other stuff. The mini version suits my needs just fine and works great as far as I am concerned. However, I have to agree with the last review (the one before mine) the manual basically sucks. It doesn't do much for the non-professional so I forced to contact Security Camera King and their tech support department. I too was connected to Zeke who did an excellent job and all problems were solved without a hitch. You would think Security Camera King would get someone that's a professional and who knows English well to rewrite those manuals. It would save them a lot of grief as far as support issues are concerned with CCTV ignorant people like myself. The equipment and support are great, but the manual not so much, so that is why I too am giving it a rating of four stars.

First off I am giving a 4 star rating because of the manual - although comprehensive - it does not define terms used in the menu system or what the effect of changes does causing me to contact customer service with questions. The DVR itself is fantastic. Works great and sets up quickly. Not being a computer genius, I needed help with port forwarding and setting the dvr to interact with my LAN. Customer service was fantastic and I would like to give a shout out to one of the techs - Zeke. Knowledgeable and very pleasant to work with. Knew his business.

If you are looking for a standalone 16 channel DVR that can record all 16 channels simultaneously in D1 resolution at 30 frames per second, but you don't need a lot of extra features, than I would recommend this DVR. You'll get high quality color or black and white video recordings and a machine that will do so without skipping any frames or giving you any crashes. Even though it's a "Mini" it still has some audio and alarm connections available as well. The biggest difference is that there is less room for additional internal hard disk drives and it cannot handle an internal DVD burner, but if these things are really important to you, I would suggest you just bump up to the full size model anyway. The H.264 video compression does an excellent job and is universal in that you can use a flash drive in the USB port to copy footage and easily transfer it to your computer and view it or you can burn CDs or DVDs from your computer. The design of the DVR is sleek, short, and sweet. It is a small 1U case with a few indicator lights and buttons of the front including a multidirectional/function button for controlling things. There is a USB port on the front and one on the back as well. I put my mouse in the back so I can easily access the front one with my flash drive. The back has all the connections for the cables and wires, including a total of three separate simultaneous main monitor displays using the HDMI, VGA, and BNC connections. There is also an RS232 (haven't got a clue what this is for though the manual says something about keyboard/data) and the AB connection (RS485) to use for things like remote OSDs or controlling PTZ cameras. This DVR is truly incredible; Security Camera King offers top notch technical support on issues from installation to set up and configuration, and the DVR comes with a 3 year warranty. I don't see how you can go wrong with this one.

Although it will probably be pretty obvious by my review that I am not a CCTV professional, I couldn't believe a unit this small could handle 16 channels of D1 video at 30 frames per second, 4 channels of audio, alarms, two way audio, multiple displays, and remote access via the Internet. There was just no way. I've got one of the highest performance computers on the market today and it couldn't handle all of that. Well, I was wrong. I thought for sure that once I ordered this DVR I would probably open it up, try it out, and then return it, but NO WAY. I can't believe how well it works for such a small unit. I've used it to upgrade my older unit and the videos on this unit are even better. They are better enough that I have returned to place and order for some 700TVL cameras. I like the OSD controls, the speed search, the one click search, etc. They are nice features. The remote access via the Internet is somthing that I never had with my old DVR and it still amazes me. I use both my home computer and my Droid to access the system and both work well. Security Camera King has a very good technical support department too.

The picture is absolutely awesome even when using our old cameras! I love the feature that allows you to zoom in and enlarge a part of a screen even though it blurs it a bit. It makes me look forward to updating our cameras soon because I have no doubt that the blurring would be minimized if not eliminated. I also like the part with one click I can review the last 5 minutes of any camera. This is a fantastic DVR setup and I know it will help my store immensely.

I purchased this unit to replace an old outdated system that had been water damaged by a storm. I was very excited about replacing the old one and this was the perfect opportunity. After receiving this DVR I plugged everything up and it works great! All the cameras instantly looked much clearer and the color was much more vivid. This also had a higher frame rate so playback was very smooth. My supervisor was very happy with this so we purchased a second one for another store in our company. Glad to say the other General Manager was very excited too! This unit works so well and is very user friendly that my supervisor wants to replace the DVR in 2 more stores.

I like this DVR in particular because it gives you the advantage of 16 channels of simultaneous high quality video with out taking up a lot of space or costing a bundle of cash. It records nice smooth D1 resolution video at realtime for all 16 channels simultaneously if necessary and it does so without missing a beat. No missed frames, skips, or crashes. I'm also surprised that as a "mini" unit Security Camera King has still been able to make it display three main monitor displays simultaneously. The unit is easy to operate too. Basically you can use the buttons on the front of the unit for control or better yet it comes with both an infrared remote control and a USB mouse. You'll use those to operate the DVR's On Screen Display menu system which will allow you to navigate through multiple pages of set up and configuration options. The whole thing is designed in a very "user friendly" way with an intuitive OSD so that just about anyone can figure out how to use it without a lot of effort. I doubt you'll find a quality unit like this one in any outlet or retail store.
