8 Channel HD Series 1080p HD-SDI Realtime Security DVR
Review by Laura Swartwood on Oct 01, 2014
I recently ordered a full all out HD-SDI 8 camera set that included this DVR and it works great. I guess this is the "luxury model" of the HD-SDI DVRs because it can house a lot of internal hard disk drives, has full audio support for 8 channels, alarm hook ups, and plenty of display options. This is my first Security Camera King purchase, but I think I will be returning to SecurityCameraKing.com in the future. All I can say for a review is that if you are considering this DVR I don't think you'll be disappointed, just read the specifications to see all the options. I like the On Screen Display menu as it makes setting features and cameras easy. I must admit the owner's manual could use a little work, but I have already called Security Camera King and contacted their technical support department with some questions and they were very nice, and happy to answer them. Owning this 1080p system is like having 8 full digital video movie cameras that capture in high definition and 8 separate DVD players and recorders in one machine. I'll have to give this a rating of 5 stars, but check the "Comments" section if there are any doubts because if something should go wrong in the future, I will update my review.

I have no complaints about the Security Camera King 8 Channel HD-SDI recorder. It works well, has lots of functions and can be access ed remotely anywhere Internet is available. Speaking of which, I especially appreciate Security Camera King making those remote access programs and apps available for free. By the time you purchase the 8 HD-SDI cameras, you have made quite an investment in equipment, but it is still better (and just as good as far as I am concerned) as IP network equipment and still cheaper over all.

This DVR is a beast! I can't believe the power and performance from this recorder! It records all 8 cameras at 2 megapixels or 1080p resolution and 30 frames per second simultaneously and still is capable of remote access via the Internet with up to 20 people. I don't know how it does it, but it does! With all that activity, it still seems to run pretty quietly and efficiently giving off a small amount of heat. You can tell this is a quality made DVR by the way, because unlike many cheap knock offs, this one is made with space under the board to allow for adequate cooling. Great piece of electronic equipment. If you are thinking of purchasing this DVR I don't think you will encounter any problems, and if you do, I can tell you that Security Camera King does have an excellent support staff that will help you through it.

This DVR is the top of the 8 channel 1080p HD-SDI line. I haven't found any better. The recorded videos are extremely clear, sharp, and detailed. Color is spot on and black and white (or monochrome, whatever you want to call it under infrared) is just as detailed as the color video. There are a lot external options such as 8 full channels of audio input and output, alarms, and connectors for setting up an RS485 connection for things like an HD-SDI PTZ camera. There's also multiple display connections for monitors, two extra USB ports on the back, and an eSATA port. eSata devices will work with the unit but they can't require extra drivers, i.e. they have to work right out of the box with no installation process. We use this machine at our business and it works great. The only thing is, if you are a do it yourselfer or you have someone else install your system and you think you may make some changes to it later down the road, I suggest that you tag or label each wire/cable as to what it is to make it easier to identify later. When this thing is connected with a lot of external devices, the back of the unit kind of looks like one of those old fashioned switchboards with all the wires running every which way. I'm a neat freak, so I tried my best to keep mine easy to read and simple.

The extras this full size unit just doesn't include the external hook-ups. Internally there are plenty of electronic features. Since the DVR records at 1080p resolution per channel with all 8 channels simultaneously (plus audio if you use it) you can use up internal hard drive space fairly quickly. However if you need a lot of internal hard drive disks and you don't need to purchase the optional DVD burner, it does have room for up to 8 internal hard disk drives. Speaking of the DVD burner, it's a steal at only $37.95 and Security Camera King will install your hard drives and DVD burner for free! Motion detect recording works well for us and uses much less hard drive space. We really have no need to record our cameras anyway if no one or nothing is moving in the camera view. The DVR does a good job of recording, by the way, all 8 channels without dropping any frames or freezing or any of those complications. The internal electronic features make it incredibly powerful. The only negative aspect is that the instruction manuals aren't very good, but there is an easy work around for that too. If you have any questions, all you have to do is call Security Camera King's technical support department and they will answer your questions for you.

Considering the great quality and performance of the recorder and the excellent customer service and support given by Security Camera King, I can't rate it anything but 5 stars.

If you want a great alternative to IP network megapixel cameras systems I would suggest you try this DVR. You basically get the same high definition (1080p or 2 megapixels) video image at 30 frames per second for all cameras and there's no networking needed, other than to plug it into the Internet so you can use the remote access features, email notification alarms, and such. Are DVR is located in our network closet (I'd be lying if I called it a server room) and we use the USB mouse or the buttons on the unit to control the DVR. We've never used the remote control, so I can't really say how that works. As for the multiple displays, we do use both the HDMI and VGA and they work great without any problems. I have used the USB ports for making copies of partial footage and for other things and they work great. We have not had the need to use the eSATA feature yet so I can't really say much about that. It's a good DVR and the video image is really detailed and crisp and clear.

The install is simple and the DVR is easy to use. The video quality is outstanding especially in regard to clarity and definition -- 1080p resolution picks up a tremendous amount of detail. I'm glad I purchased this DVR from Security Camera King and would gladly recommend it to others.

No business should be without one of these Security Camera King recorders. In fact, the investment really isn't that high to purchase an HD-SDI system to protect your home as well. The video recording at 1080p at 30 frames per second is excellent quality. It is just as good as the video I get from my regular video camera; the colors are bright, the picture is clear and sharp, and the details are great. Even the monitoring picture is at D1 resolution. What I like about this full size HS-SDI DVR is all the extra features. Using all these features, the DVR actually becomes the control center for your security system, if you set it up that way. I feel like I have really gotten the most out of this unit by utilizing so many of these features to my advantage that it is definitely worth the cost. I use all available alarm connections plus a few audio connections including the two way audio option. I also have some cameras linked to the alarm triggers. Finally the remote user access option works great too. It wasn't nearly as difficult to set this up as I thought it would be. There are so many features, it really is amazing and the support staff is very helpful. I think when you find a company that has such a dedicated support staff, it is also an indication of the true quality standards not only for the employees but for the merchandise as well and for that I give them five stars.

I'd call this Security Camera Kings' "King" of 8 channel DVRs. Excellent piece of equipment. Besides the fact that you can use existing coaxial cable for your Hd-SDI camera to DVR connection, the video recordings are outrageously clear and fine. It wouldn't matter if I had to run new cable for this system because as a do it your selfer I feel much more confident using this system than messing with an IP network megapixel camera and NVR system. I've got this system in my store, and I believe that with the high definition resolution, you can actually cut down on the number of cameras you use in many circumstances. I have no problems making identification of potential shop lifters or if someone tried to rob our cash register because the picture is so fine. The DVR is quiet, works smoothly, and seems to have no problem recording all 8 channels simultaneously at 30 frames per second. This full size unit has lots of room for internal hard disk drives for your video storage and I would recommend that you purchase more storage than what you think you might need. I think it's better to have extra than not enough. Remote access via the Internet works great on my Android and I love it.

Security Camera King always seems to be on top of things when it comes to leading edge technology and I knew it wouldn't be long before they started selling HD-SDI systems and I'm glad. Basically, the easiest way to describe this recorder is to say that it is a DVR (not an NVR) but records the same very high resolution video that IP network megapixel systems are capable of and it does it without the need for network cable. You can still use existing or new coaxial cable. From a marketing standpoint and a professional CCTV installer, it's about time. It seems to me that some customers have a tendency to be "scared off" by the sound of an "IP network" system even though they want the high resolution quality videos. This 8 Channel HD-SDI DVR gives them just that with out the hassles of needing a network, taking up bandwidth on an existing network, or needing a computer expert to operate it. What's more is that it still has the ability to connect to a network or the Internet and be operated remotely via Internet based devices (like tablets, computers, Blackberrys, and smartphones). This full size unit comes with all the bells and whistles including enough room for extra internal hard disk storage drives and even an optional internal DVD burner if you like. It's surprisingly easy to install and set up and my customers that have purchased it have no complaints and seem to love it!

Wow, this DVR is incredible! It's hard to believe that a DVR using coaxial cable from the cameras is able to give you 1080p resolution video! I recently purchased this DVR and the HD-SDI cameras from Security Camera King to upgrade my old system. I tried using my old monitor and what a joke! I purchased a new HD LCD monitor/TV because the resolution and clarity would be wasted on an old fashioned CRT monitor. Anyway, since I am one of the first to complete a review on the Security Camera King site for the DVR I thought I'd write a fairly detailed account of my opinions. Here goes.

I've seen where some people have tried to compare this system to a typical analog TVL resolution system. That's wrong, because other than the coaxial cable, there really is no comparison. The system is far more expensive than a typical DVR based system with 700TVL resolution cameras. On the other hand, you would expect it to be considering the type and amount of technology that is used in this system. Each camera ranges around $230 minimum in price for an HD-SDI and although the camera mechanism itself may not have many extra features remember that the camera is capturing video in 1080p (2 megapixels) resolution at 30 frames per second. And of course, it is using standard RG59 or RG6 coaxial cable, so CAT5 Ethernet cable doesn't have to be run which is particularly convenient for upgrading old systems.

It would be more proper to compare this system to an IP network megapixel camera and NVR system because the resolutions obtainable are comparable. The difference here is that the HD-SDI system camera won't use network bandwidth to transmit to the recorder, yet you can still access the entire system remotely via your network or the Internet. On the other hand, network cameras can usually be accessed directly over the Internet, but HD-SDI cameras must b e connected to and HD-SDI DVR.

This particular DVR is what I would consider world class. It's got 8 video channels as well as 8 audio channels for recording. It also has the capability to display up to three main monitor displays using the HDMI, VGA, and/or BNC outputs (in my opinion the HDMI is the best). It doesn't have to record in 1080p resolution; there are options for 720p, D1, and CIF as well. There are also alarm inputs and alarm device outputs, or the alarms can be tied in with the DVR system to initiate camera recording. As far as performance is concerned, don't be....lol. The DVR is a peak performer and handles the work load of all the features and functions smoothly and effortlessly. As of yet, I haven't had one single lock up, crash, etc.

The DVR operates like any other standard Security Camera King DVR, that is it can control PTZ cameras, grant remote access via your network or the Internet to multiple users, has plenty of storage options, can accept an internal DVD burner and honors full pentaplex function without a hitch. I could go on and on because I like this system so much but I'd sound more like a commercial than a review. With that in mind, I'll close by saying that this DVR is very high quality and works great and the Security Camera King technical support people do a good job too!
