32 Channel Elite Compact Series - 1.5 U Network Video Recorder with 16 POE Ports
Review by Kurt Gausemann on Oct 15, 2014
This NVR with the built in power supply (Power Over the Ethernet-POE) is the only way to go if you are going to run a network security system, especially if you don't have a network. I know there are certain circumstances when you may need a single injector or outright external power supplies for all the cameras in a system but it's great to have a built in one-cable-does all type of arrangement. And 16 ports POE gives us plenty of room for all of our cameras.

The recorder seems to function well. My first impression when taking it out of the box was that this is not some cheap Chinese knock off you'll find in a box store. I don't believe, on the other hand that the quality is "exquisite" but it certainly is in the upper range. The recorder is obviously made overseas as you can tell by the poor translation to English in the owner's manual. Actually the translation is ok, but the instructions lack much of an explanation of how or why.

The recordings are definitely network megapixel quality. Highly detailed, sharp images. There are a lot of extras (such as alarm hook ups) that you can use if you want to. Overall I would rate this at about four stars. I would recommend it to others.

Our office deals in finance and demands that we use high resolution security cameras for use either during the day or in the evening when the building is closed. We do have a small office network, but with this system it truly isn't necessary other than to provide an incoming Internet source. Although this particular recorder can actually record at resolutions as high as 3 megapixels, we have opted to use 16 2-megapixel (1080p) cameras recording at 8 Mbps which actually maxes out the recording rate of the NVR yet it handles the workload very nicely. We really haven't opted to use the audio functions but we did decide to go ahead and use the alarms and alarm relay outputs, especially for protecting, ironically as it may seem, our server room. This NVR is particularly convenient because the NVR eliminates the need for any additional power switches on the network to supply power to the cameras as this function is built in with POE (Power over the Ethernet). We do have pre-wired RJ45 wall jacks in most of our office rooms so all I have to do is run a jumper CAT5 from the frame to the POE connection on the back of the NVR to connect the cameras. For a few of the cameras where we couldn't utilize the pre-wired jacks we just ran our own CAT5E direct from the camera to the NVR. The recordings are high quality, easily reproducible, and are very clear. The simultaneous remote access feature using the Internet as a vehicle for delivery is a great idea and works well. Thanks to Security Camera King for making the apps and software easy and free to download. We'd recommend this machine, no doubt.

I think this is one of the best ways to go for a 32 channel NVR. With the POE unit built in, you've got just about everything included that you need except the Ethernet cables and the cameras. I suppose there are some customers that would run the full 32 channel setup, but that will severely limit your frame rate or resolution so the 16 port POE is more realistic and practical.

The dual core processor certainly does an excellent job of handling the workload of all that video data being received, processed and stored. The video quality is just excellent. The pictures are clear, sharp, and colorful, and if you go with the 1080p definition, there are very few details that can be missed.

The On Screen Display (OSD) or GUI (Graphical User Interface), whatever you want to call it, is set up muck like a Windows Explorer format where all you really have to do is check indexes for the pages that you want, navigate there and click on choices for setting up the configuration of your NVR and cameras. Security Camera King has done a pretty good job of designing this unit. My only "complaint" is that it would be nice to see this in a full-size 2U case to have even more room for internal hard disk drives and the internal DVD burner. However, it is true that you are not limited to storage space in the current configuration because you can easily add an external NAS via the eSata port or other external drives via USB.

This is an excellent recorder that contains features that I haven't seen on other similar competing brands, and it automatically comes with a 3 year warranty. Many of the other dealers will offer a 1 year warranty but will want you to "purchase" additional time (such as a 3 year warranty). Security Camera King has excellent tech support too that is always willing to help.

This is the way to go for a network recorder than can record (actually up to 32) 16 decent size resolution megapixel cameras and not have to worry about the cameras' power requirements. As long as your cameras are PoE compatible, all your really have to do is mount the camera and plug in the CAT5 Ethernet cable and you're nearly ready to start recording. The On screen display (OSD) menu is intuitive, that is, you can pretty much get the idea of how to use it by just watching the prompts as they pop up on the screen. What isn't so intuitive is the whys or hows; the manuals kind of lack these explanations but the technical support staff at Security Camera King was very generous and accommodating in helping me to learn what I needed to know and to get things set up properly. If there were another company that sold the exact some NVR at the exact same price with the exact same warranty coverage, I would still recommend Security Camera King because of their technical support.
