4 Channel HD-CVI DVR Mini Realtime
Review by Homer Simpson (See below) on Aug 08, 2014
Warning: This review is written by an idiot who is slowly turning into a genius. I used Homer Simpson as an alias to protect my integrity....lol.

I purchased the 4 Channel HD-CVI DVR Mini Realtime unit to replace my broken DVR. No I don't know anything about security cameras and no I didn't do any research. I saw the price read something about "High Definition" and decided to purchase it. Okay, so I am an idiot, but at least give me credit for admitting it. After receiving the DVR I gradually became aware that an "HD-CVI" DVR needs "HD-CVI" cameras. Needless to say, my education began and I have learned a lot about video security camera systems since then (probably more than I need to know). So I bought four new cameras from Security Camera King, these were of the HD-CVI 1.3 Megapixel type and WHAMO!...What a picture! This DVR and camera combination beats my old system 100 fold and it is definitely worth the little extra money for the clarity of the video. One small bit of advice. If you see or hear about how you can replace your old system without running new cable by using an HD-CVI DVR it is absolutely true, however, don't make the same mistake I did and not research it if you are not familiar with it. Security Camera King does have a very good sales and technical support staff that are more than willing to help you without charge.

This DVR works well and is easy to connect and use, yet very powerful and high performance functional. This mini only has a few connectors so it is complicated to install your own HD-CVI system. There are 4 "Video In" HD-CVI BNC connectors, one each audio in and audio out for two way talk with recording, 2 monitor outputs (you can use either HDMI or VGA or both), an "AB" wire pair for an RS485 connection for things like a PTZ, an Internet port (RJ45), and an extra USB port (there is one on the front too) on the back of the unit. The video recordings are crystal clear high definition 720p color (or black and white)smooth, life like motion. Speaking of motion, I have set mine for motion detection only recording and it GREATLY saves on disk space since the unit is limited to only one internal hard disk drive. I had a couple questions about equipment compatibility so I contacted Security Camera King and the directed me to their support department. They have excellent support so with a great products and excellent follow up as far as support is concerned, they are definitely getting a five star rating from me.

I really like this DVR. Here's a few things to remember about Security Camera King's 4 Channel HD-CVI DVR. You get a great high definition video recording although it is 720p versus say 1080p that you would get with the mini HD-SDI recorder. However your camera cable runs can be many times longer without degradation of the signal or the need for boosters, etc. And most importantly, you get the same basic type of DVR as an HD-SDI model, except the price tag on this 4 channel mini is more than $300 cheaper than an equivalent HD-SDI model. Did I mention? I really like this DVR.

I know the big seller on these HD-CDI as well as the HD-SDI systems is the ability to obtain megapixel quality recording by using this equipment without the need for replacing existing coaxial cable. However, the HD-CDI has one more benefit that exceeds even that of the SDI series and that is length of transmission. We purchased this DVR (and cameras) to replace our old CIF resolution system of coverage of an equipment storage area quite a ways away from the location of our main plant. We really wanted megapixel quality and would have purchased an IT network megapixel system a long time ago but the one thing we didn't want to do was invest in additional expense for running CAT5 Ethernet cables and setting up a network system when we really don't even have much of a network. So our alternative was HD-SDI but (although I'm not sure of the exact amount) our distance between the cameras and the DVR varies, but I'm guessing we have one that maxes out at near 1000 feet or more in length. The quality of the video of that camera is still excellent and we use no boosters or extra devices. The DVR is controlled by a computer-like interface called an On Screen Display (OSD) menu system that provides for many programming features including motion detection recording. So far we are very satisfied with our system and the way it performs.
