8 Channel Elite Mini Economy Series H.264 Realtime Security DVR
Review by Kip Haas on May 01, 2013
We have recently purchased the Security Camera King 8 Channel Ultimate Series H.264 D1 Realtime Security DVR and it works just great. We like the larger D1 (704 X 480 pixels) resolution (as compared to the smaller CIF resolution) for the type of recording that we do. However, after talking to my neighbors recently and catching wind of the fact that we have had some local house burglaries that have occurred both during the day in broad daylight and at night, my wife and I decided it was time we protect our home. But we didn't really have a large budget to deal with. So, we purchased the DVR-EL8240ME 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy Series DVR and we love it! The Elite mini DVR has a much lower resolution display of CIF (352 X 240 pixels) for real time rate recording, although you can still record D1 resolution if you want at a reduced frame rate of 7 frames per second. I experimented with using the CIF versus the D1 resolution recordings and the recording rates and ultimately decided that the CIF resolution is more than adequate for our needs here at home, and not only is the resolution lower, but the price is much, much lower too! The DVR is too small to hold a DVD burner but that's not an issue for us either. For our home use, we haven't had the need to make any back ups but if we ever need to, we'll use a USB thumb drive (that I keep handy with the DVR supplies) or USB the files to transfer them to our personal computer. Likewise the Mini is all too small to hold a lot of internal hard drives, but again, at home that's not an issue, especially when you record in CIF. I think the feature we both like the most is the remote access through the Internet. I have an iPhone telephone through my work and my wife has an iPhone. We both have downloaded the Security Camera King free apps and can access the DVR remotely. So when ever we are away, and we both do some traveling for work, we can always check in on the house and make sure everything is ok. This is a great DVR for use anywhere, but we especially like it for protecting our home. Finally, if you are a do it yourselfer and you have never installed a security camera system before, don't worry. It's relatively easy and should you have any problems with any part of your installation, the Security Camera King Support crew is always there ready to help Monday through Fridays. They were excellent in helping me solve what I thought were going to be some difficult problems, but after talking with them they were taken care of in a jiffy.

I purchased this Security Camera King DVR about 6 months ago. It was a replacement for a much cheaper (I mean in quality and price) brand DVR that I bought with a much cheaper (this time definitely quality) package system from another vendor. I learned the hard way on this one; you don't always get what you pay for. Since owning this DVR I have had absolutely no problems. The video recordings are high quality in color or black and white and are relatively easy to see (CIF resolution display can be a little small as I have learned). I actually use this DVR for my home and I must say that for residential use, this unit does do a very good job at a very reasonable price. The DVR can be connected to the Internet and you can have the CVR send you an email notification when a camera is triggered. I should mention that I am a complete newbie with these things (my brother installed the last one for me and I never touched it), but when I set up the DVR I got about 90 email notifications at work the next day. It was driving me nuts. Then I realized that the way I had my outdoor cameras aimed they were picking up motion from the wind and the squirrels in the upper branches of the trees. I re-aimed the cameras and also called Security Camera King support. They knew right away what I had done wrong and how to correct it (privacy masking). As soon as they gave me the proper instructions everything worked great, and has continued to do so ever since. Since that time, I have bothered to take the time to do some research and some homework on security camera systems (particularly this one) and I have become pretty proficient with using it and making adjustments. I have also learned how to use the remote access features and love it. I will buy any future security camera products from Security Camera King.

Although I install these things for a living, I'm actually writing about this particular unit with reference to residential use only. I think these is one of the most perfect DVRs for residential use. Here's why:
The DVR records all eight cameras in CIF resolution at 30 frames per second. Often times, 4 channel units just aren't quite enough and a 16 channel unit for residential use is more than likely overkill so an 8 channel unit is just about right. You don't have to use all eight channels, but if you need more than 4, this is the applicable DVR. Also, for the average residential user, CIF resolution is generally large enough. If you absolutely need D1 size resolution at 30 frames per second, then you will need to jump up to the Ultimate Mini, but it's going to cost you $200 or more dollars too. If you feel you don't need 30 frames per second capture rates and are willing to "settle" for 7 frames per second, which is still enough to give you a good idea of what is going on outside and in, then you can record all 8 channels on this unit at D1 at the reduced rate. Seldom do I find actual residential customers that require audio recording, and unless it is absolutely essential I try to dissuade them from it to prevent them getting into any liability hassles. This DVR doesn't have audio, so that saves you some money. If you record all 8 cameras at CIF and 30 frames per second continuously, 24 hours a day at their highest quality setting, you'll use up less than 700 gigs of storage space per week. The 2 Terabyte internal hard drive for $189 will get you through about 3 weeks before re-writing, usually more than enough for residential purposes. One thing that I consider not so great about this DVR is that it only has VGA and BNC output connections to a monitor. Everything seems to be HDMI now these days so it would be nice to have that feature. On the positive side, you aren't recording audio, and most LCD TV/Monitors that come with HDMI these days also come with VGA connections so you certainly aren't left hanging out there with just certain monitors. Rarely, do residential companies need to make DVDs or CDs. Usually they are only necessary should a potential problematic event occur. However, there still comes the unfortunate time when they may be necessary. Although this unit cannot support an internal DVD burner, it can support certain USB models as well as a USB thumb drive that can be used to copy or transfer the files (you can save them on your personal computer and burn a disk from there). Finally, the Internet functions are superior for residential use. The DVR can send you an e-mail notification when a trigger is activated (motion detection on a camera for example) and if you have a smartphone, tablet, or PC, you can access your system remotely and watch that particular camera live. So, in summary, if I sound biased, I am. I love to recommend this system for my residential customers because I know they won't be disappointed with it. By the way, I own one myself.

I wrote a review for the Security Camera King full size 8 Channel Elite Series H.264 Realtime Security DVR back in September 2012 for the model that we purchased a few months before at work. After seeing how well that one worked and how good Security Camera King's tech support was, I decided to buy the "Mini" version to install in my home. You know the funny thing is, as far as use (once everything is installed and set up) , there's almost no difference between the two. Both models work great! Both the VGA display and the CIF recording resolution works fine for us. Since I had already installed and operated the unit at work, I paraded around the house like a professional when I installed my own system after it arrived (my wife wasn't the lightest bit impressed). I set our DVR up in the TV room and connected it to the VGA port on our large screen LCD TV. It's nice to see what is going on while I am watching TV and I can even use to check on the weather outside without leaving my chair! Good quality, excellent video, and works well with the Internet remote access features, all at a low cost. When I installed the unit at work, I had to seek help from Security Camera King's support department and they were great. This time it wasn't necessary but I know they are a very good support team.

About two weeks ago, a 23 year old male shot and killed someone just down my street on the corner. This is a nice neighborhood, in a rural community. A deputy sheriff lives on the same street and around the corner on the other street lives a local policeman. I'm getting a bit too old for this crap, and as a result of this shooting, I decided to purchase an 8 channel security system from Security Camera King. I custom made it with the 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy Series H.264 Realtime Security DVR being part of that system. Now that I have installed everything and it is up and running I really enjoy it. It may not be able to stop another shooting, but I guarantee you that if I'm at home my security camera system will see them coming far in advance! Actually, that was another part of my motivation for purchasing the system. The local news channel showed footage from a security camera system of the house the shooting occurred in front of. It happened on the side walk and still was in the field of view of the resident's security cameras. Although I wanted an 8 camera DVR system, I didn't need a lot of other features on the DVR and I didn't want to pay an "arm and a leg" for it either, so I purchased the 8 channel Elite Mini. I connected the VGA port to my large screen LCD TV and I can monitor the system while I'm sitting in my living room relaxing. The DVR is smooth working, it seems like it is really good quality craftsmanship and it wasn't that difficult to set up (if I could do it anyone can). In addition, I did contact Security Camera King's support department and they were great! I'll gladly give this DVR five stars!

The company I work for has the Security Camera King 8 channel Elite full size DVR and it works great, totally! So after my wife and I decided that we should have a system at home I decided to Check out Security Camera King's website to see if there was something we could afford. When I discovered the 8 Channel Elite Mini I was stoked! It seemed like just the perfect DVR for us at home. We actually need about 7 cameras. Four cameras is too little and we don't quite need a full eight. Also, I don't need to bother with recording sound or setting up an alarm as our home already has our new home already has a pre-wired alarm system in it. Actually, the main reason why we wanted a security camera system was so we could monitor the house when we our away and use one channel as a baby monitor. This Elite mini works great for that! I placed the DVR in our bedroom and connected it to the VGA input on our bedroom's LCD TV. We already have a wireless baby monitor (sound) so all we have to do to get a visual is switch the input on the TV. There are two things about this 8 channel systems that I especially like. First, the price is incredibly cheap for the quality of the unit and the number of features that come with the DVR. Second, It has just about complete remote access using the Internet so we can access the system from our personal computers during the day at work or from just about anywhere using our iPhones. We are eventually going to upgrade this system after our detached garage/workshop's construction is completed. I'll be back!
This Security Camera King 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy Series H.264 Real-time Security DVR is great for home use at a price that just about anyone could afford. My house isn't a perfect square and I also have a detached tools shed so 4 cameras really isn't enough to cover my home area. Eight channels does the job much better but I never thought I would be able to afford an eight channel DVR. I was really surprised when I discovered the Security Camera King model. Although I have to admit, I was a little concerned about buying it over the Internet because the price seemed unbelievably cheap so I thought the unit would fall apart not long after using it. It's been about 11 months to the day since I made my purchase and the DVR works like the first day when I set it up. The unit works very well, has a ton of features, and has more than enough internal drive storage than I will probably ever need. (And it beats the heck out of the cheap machines I've seen in local stores around here.)

We have the Security Camera King 8 Channel Ultimate Series H.264 D1 Realtime Security DVR at work at it works just great. The large D1 (704 X 480 pixels) resolution is needed because of the nature of the surveillance recording that we perform. However, after talking to my neighbors recently and catching wind of a few house burglaries that have occurred during the day in broad daylight, my wife and I decided it was time we protect our home. So, we purchased the DVR-EL8240ME 8 Channel Elite Mini Economy Series DVR and we love it! The Elite mini DVR has a much lower resolution display of CIF (352 X 240 pixels) although you can still record D1 resolution is you like at a reduced frame rate of 7 frames per second. CIF resolution is more than adequate for our needs here at home, and not only is the resolution lower, but the price is much, much lower too! The DVR is too small to hold a DVD burner but that's not an issue for us either. If we ever need to make back ups we'll use a USB thumb drive or FTP the files to transfer them to our personal computer. Likewise the Mini is all too small to hold a lot of internal hard drives, but again, at home that's not an issue, especially when you record in CIF. I think the feature we both like the most is the remote access through the Internet. I have an Android telephone through my work and my wife has an iPhone. We both have downloaded the Security Camera King free apps and can access the DVR remotely. This is a great DVR for use anywhere, but we especially like it for protecting our home.
Excellent DVR to use in the home and very economical. There's not any room for a DVD burner or extra internal hard drives but s storage is a concern, buy big on the internal hard drive option. A 3 Tb hard drive should give you enough room for recording constantly on all 8 cameras for at least 5 weeks. This is a good performing high quality yet no frills unit. There are only two video output options, BNC and VGA but that is fine for me as my large screen LCD TV has a VGA input on it. The e-mail/smartphone. computer remote accessibility is awesome. If you ever need to make any copies you can use FTP or USB flashdrives pretty easily. Good buy.
