8 Channel Ultimate Series H.264 D1 Realtime Security DVR
Review by Melvin Milner on Apr 08, 2014
We ordered this online and got it in just a couple of days. This is probably truly the ultimate 8 channel analog digital video recorder. I've heard about Security Camera King from friends who use them and I'm familiar with a lot of their DVRs but I never really knew the details about them until we purchased this one. All I can say is that as far as application is concerned, I can't think of anything more you could possibly want in a DVR--it's got everything. There can't be any feature you need that isn't included on this DVR. The video recordings are crisp, colorful, and accurate. I've encountered no noise or interference or dropped frames or any of the like. We do record audio as well with this unit and the audio is clear and full, it doesn't have that sound of some units where it sounds like the audio is coming through a cheap phone. I did have a couple questions about the DVR (the manuals are fairly accurate but not very explanatory) so I contacted the technical support department. Security Camera King should be proud to boast that they have a support staff as good as the one they've got right now. These guys are very willing to help, and it's not like they act like they are afraid to give away any "trade secrets" and they do not talk "down" to you. That alone impressed me enough to go with a five star rating.

8 Channel Ultimate Series H.264 D1 Realtime Security DVR
Review by Daryll McClymond on Feb 26, 2014
Let me give you fair warning. I've never been short with words and with a recorder that offers so much as this one from Security Camera King, I can't see how you can write a review and do the machine and the company justice but keeping it to a short few words.

First, probably the most obvious issue that most people reading this wonder about is the quality of the video. That's an A+. The video recordings are very clear, very smooth D1 resolution videos at 30 frames per second so the action is as smooth as real life. I have seen no interference, no static, no noise and have had no dropped frames (that I'm aware of), no freezes, and no crashes.

Next, installation, setup, and/or configuration. That's a B+. The installation is about as simple as can be. Set it down somewhere, plug in the cables, wires, and power cord and away you go. Setup is about the same, all you have to do i push the power button and the unit turns on and fires up. Configuration is a little more involved. The DVR has an On Screen Display (OSD) menu that works similar to a computer program. To change settings on the DVR you can navigate through this OSD by using the included infrared remote control, the buttons on the front of the unit, or the included USB mouse (I prefer the mouse). Set up options are arranged according to relatively sensible categories so that you can go to hat area and make the changes or initial settings that you would like. If you do this often, there will be a learning curve albeit it is not lengthy, learning where all the adjustments are located and what you need to do with these settings to accomplish the effect you are looking for. The online manual gets about a C rating. The DVR comes with a mini-CD disk that has help programs on it, and Security Camera King has a wealth of information on their website under their CCTV Learning Center section that is very helpful. Finally, their technical support staff is incredulous. They are very willing to help, know their product inside and out, and are very friendly. This helps to compensate for the lack of information in the online manual. Support gets an A+.

The features are numerous, useful, and easily accessible. From "soft" features like motion detection recording to play back search features to "hard" features like multiple video outputs or more than one main display monitor, loop outs, and display matrixing, I really can't think of anything that is omitted on this unit. It also includes full audio support, two way audio, and alarm inputs and outputs.

Finally, the next question you may ask is, is there enough storage potential? For internal hard disk storage you basically have three options: 1. install one internal hard disk drive, 2. install multiple internal hard disk drives, and 3. install one or more internal hard disk drives and an internal DVD burner. Without using the internal DVD burner, the unit can hold up to 8 SATA internal hard disk drives and in addition the unit has an eSATA port on the back for connecting external hard disk drives. (8 Terabytes of hard drive space can hold about 11 weeks of 24 hour a day 7 days a week recording from all 8 cameras). So video and other data management gets an A+.

My overall rating of this unit, based on Security Camera King's rating system of stars is five. I hope you've found this useful.

8 Channel Ultimate Series H.264 D1 Realtime Security DVR
Review by Younger, Tom (Illinois USA) on Jan 18, 2014
This is the mother of all 8 channel DVRs. There are other DVRs that have higher resolutions (like 960H or megapixels) but for a TVL camera based DVR with parallel features, this has got to be security central. The best thing about it is not only does it offer all of the features and quality performance but the price is reasonable for this class of video security camera recorder. My DVR records all 8 channels at D1 resolution at 30 frames per second and the quality of the video is crisp, clear, and colorful and the infrared night time videos are just as sharp. You can also record in CIF resolution which is smaller but I don't know who would want to (why bother when you can do D1 in realtime?). Physically speaking the DVR has the buttons on the front along with two USB 2.0 ports, one for the mouse to operate the unit and the other for whatever you like (Flash drive, external disk burner, external hard drive, heck it'll probably make pancakes if there is a USB device that can do that). The back of the DVR is like the Grand Central Station of wires and cables if you use a lot of the features. There are connections for the video, audio, and alarm hookups as well as multiple output monitor displays eSATA connection (as if the USB isn't enough) and the Internet connection. The DVR works smooth, silent, and with low heat output. The On Screen Display takes a little getting used to if you haven't used this brand before but it shouldn't take that long. If you have any questions, Security Camera King has a great technical support crew. I don't know if it is just one or two guys or a whole big staff but it doesn't matter because they are willing to answer any question you have (unless it's about asking how to make pancakes; my advice would be to keep the questions to video security systems). This has got to be a big seller for Security Camera King and if you are in the market for purchasing one, you can't go wrong with this one.

I think I have probably installed more of these DVRs than any other type of DVR combined. This is what I consider a full-service, full-quality, 8 channel DVR that is excellent for both residential and commercial accounts. Recording at D1 resolution at 30 frames per second is as good as it gets (unless you move into the "specialty" categories with 960H, HD-SDI, or network camera systems. The On Screen Dispaly is fairly easy to operate on this DVR so there is very little "training time" that I have to provide my customers. The only negative side is the instruction manual basically tells you to select one thing or another, but it isn't set to actually teach you how to do things. The features on this DVR are beyond belief with all kinds of extras like loop outs for every channel, audio recording, alarm connections and even up to three main monitor displays. This comes in really handly by the way when a commercial customer desides they would like a monitor in their office and another one at their retail counter. The DVR offers plenty of internal space for internal hard disk drives, an intenral DVD burner or a combination of both. It also offers many other options for file management such as as USB 2.0 external devices and FTP. I'm not sure you could do much more to make this one better Security Camera King, but keep up the good work!

This DVR basically sets the standard for all the 8 channel D1 resolution video recorders in the industry. I may sound like a salesman in this review but I've got to tell you I've installed many of these units and I haven't had a disappointed client yet. Not even one call back or repair call either. And personally, I truly can't think of a feature that you will find on another DVR that isn't already on this one. The DVR is versatile enough that it can be used for residential or commercial use, but because of some of the features like extra internal hard disk drive space, room for an internal DVD burner, loop outs for each channel, alarm connections and multiple displays I think it lends itself for to the commercial side than the residential. Regardless of the application, the unit has an On Screen Display menu system that is pretty intuitive and easy to follow so you don't have to be a video security specialist or a computer expert in order to operate it. However, on the other side, there are a few more advanced features like remote PTZ control via the RS485 connection, an RS232 port for keyboard data work, and even an eSATA port for external hard drive connections besides the multiple USB ports. Not only are there plenty of useful features but the quality of the video recordings is incredible.

I'd say this unit IS the Security Camera King. This 8 channel Ultimate has got to be one of Security Camera King's best selling units because its got the right amount of features and more and the quality and performance is excellent. If you are looking for a recorder that can handle recording all channels simultaneously in D1 resolution (704 x 480 pixels) plus audio, this is it. This definitely has the competition beat by far.

I have installed several of these units and the customers have always been happy. They are one of the best buys on the CCTV market right now wor a realtime D1 resolution 8 channel recorder. The OSD is easy enough for the customer to operate without any problems. I've been dealing with Security Camera King for about 3 years now and intend to continue.

I have installed many of these Security Camera King 8 Channel Ultimate Series H.264 D1 Realtime Security DVRs since as far back as 2009 (four years ago). I really do like this DVRs and in fact I own one myself. I recently wrote a review article for our local security business organization. I don't like short, uninformative reviews so I apologize in advance if this seems rather lengthy but it seemed like a good idea to copy it and present here as well.

Security Camera King is an on-line video supply store that offers a wealth of security camera equipment both large and small, including complete package systems for do it your selfers and professional CCTV installers alike. You can visit them at www.securitycamerakind.com. One of the their feature DVRs, the 8 Channel Ultimate Series H.264 D1 Realtime Security DVR is a favorite of mine and many of my clients; here's why. This DVR is 100% quality all the way. Security Camera King backs it with a full three year warranty. The DVR not only hosts up to 8 channels of D1 resolution "real time" (30 frames per second) rate recorded videos, but also has 8 channels for audio input, I audio output and multiple input and output channels for alarm hookups. Alarm devices can be run directly off the power from the DVR if they are 12VDC devices, if not, relays can be used with other power sources to facilitate alarm devices. The DVR operates on a Linux computer operating system and is a total standalone unit. Firmware can be updated if needed via downloads from the Internet or via the USB port.

The display options on this unit are plentiful. Up to three main monitors can be displayed at once by this unit by using the HDMI, VGA, and BNC video outputs. Of course the HDMI output not only provides 1080p quality display resolution but carries sound as well (this is in addition to the audio output connector). Also, there are loop outs for each video channel making provisions for spot monitors at any given camera location and there is also a selectable video matrix output that can be used to show a programmed set of cameras. Video compression is completed by digital processing chips using the highly efficient H.264 format which provides excellent quality video with little sacrifice to quality for smaller file size. This DVR can record in either D1 or CIF resolution format.

The entire DVR is basically controlled by an On Screen Display menu which is pretty intuitive. There may be a slight learning curve to using the OSD but it is primarily in recognizing where (on what menu pages) features exist. Otherwise use entails basically checking boxes for options or inputting numbers. The OSD is also apparent on remotely accessed devices in the form of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) via the Internet. Personal computers, tablets, smartphones and other Internet compatible computer-like devices may be used for remote access anywhere there is Internet service. The DVR also offers push notification email service if desired. It offers plenty of room for internal hard disk storage with up to 8 SATA drives or a lesser combination if the internal DVD burner option is chosen. In addition 8 eSATA drives may be used to store video footage externally. The DVR also offers full PTZ functionality including mouse controlled PTZ movements and 3D intelligent positioning using Security Camera King PTZ cameras. Security Camera King also offers a full time technical support department available weekdays that is knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. In my professional opinion, I can't think of a better 8 Channel D1 resolution DVR.

This is a nice DVR! It's not some cheap knock-off made out of inferior electronic components that break if you sneeze. As my grand mother used to say, this DVR "has all the fixin's" too. In addition to the nice size and definition D1 resolution recording on all channels it has sound hook ups, multiple video outputs and options, and even alarm hookups. The alarms can even be integrated with the DVR to initiate cameras or used with separate 12 VDC devices like lights and sirens. The DVR comes with its own operating system that has an On Screen Display menu system. To access functions and adjust features, all you have to do is navigate between the pages of the OSD and choose your options. You can do that using the included USB mouse, infrared remote control, or the buttons on the face of the DVR. I'll admit the DVR unit has plenty of room and is still rack mountable. Ours is mounted on our network rack. The case is a 2U size case so there is room to have a DVD burner installed and/or have extra internal hard drives installed for more video storage. The DVD burner is a steal, with Security Camera King installing it before shipping the unit for $37.95, the same price of the DVD burner uninstalled. The unit does a pretty good job of controlling our PTZ camera too. Instead of using a bulky (and annoying) joystick/keypad controller for the PTZ, all you have to do is use the mouse to point and click on the monitor and the PTZ follows. Can't beat that. Can't beat the 3 year warranty for no extra charge either. I would gladly give my endorsement to this product and Security Camera King.

Unfortunately, this doesn't do the potential purchaser any good, but I must admit that once you own this DVR you'll understand why Security Camera King calls it the "Ultimate" series DVR. First, before I say anything more, let me add this. The 8 Channel Elite DVR records all 8 channels in CIF resolution at 30 frames per second. This Ultimate DVR records all 8 channels in the much larger D1 resolution at 30 frames per second. The Ultimate DVR is only $130 more than the Elite and I think the D1 resolution is absolutely worth it. The DVR was easy to install and set up for the cameras. I also took advantage of the alarm inputs and outputs which were a little more challenging for me. Thankfully, Security Camera King has a really good technical support department because I needed help with that and with using the Graphical User Interface or GUI at first. Once they pointed out a few things to me, the DVRs layout became more familiar and it was pretty easy for me to figure things out on my own. I don't use any audio, so I can't comment on that. I did purchase the optional DVD burner because I didn't need a tremendous amount of internal hard drive space and for the low price the DVD burner was a steal! In summary, the DVR works great, it comes with a 3 year full warranty, and Security Camera King has a very "supportive" support department to help with any issues.
