Complete 16 Channel Ultimate Mini DVR Security Camera System
Review by Nathan Russilano on Apr 30, 2013
I have my own business and I install alarm systems, security camera systems, industrial electronic alerts systems, etc. Although my business is not limited to security camera installation I have installed several over the years and have been around long enough to watch them evolve from the old black and white video tape recorders to the IP megapixel systems available today. This particular package system has been very popular among my customers requiring a larger number of cameras and I think that is because of the features it offers combined with the economic price. Here's a list of some of the features that I think my customers like about this package system the most:
-16 600 TVL high resolution indoor /outdoor cameras that have realtime D1 recording on all 16 channels simultaneously (you just can't beat that)
-Ability to support several monitors and output types including HDMI, VGA, and BNC
-Audio recording on up to 4 channels
-Network board or 3D mouse PTZ camera control
-Easy to navigate on screen display menus that are used for set up and operation of the DVR and cameras (if they come equipped with it)
-16 channel simultaneous playback (while the unit is still recording)
-Internet connectability. My customers love the remote access feature where in addition to using the included USB mouse or remote control to operate the DVR they can also use a computer, iPad, or smartphone if they have Internet access.
This is just a good all around 16 channel DVR and Camera Package System that offers a good quality performance and a 3 year full warranty on the DVR. As a suggestion only, customers wanting the absolute limit of resolution in their video recording may want to upgrade to the 700 TVL cameras, especially those with the varifocal lens to take advantage of the limited zoom opportunity.

If you are looking for the lowest cost yet highest quality 16 camera security system with a D1 real time recording resolution and rate, I would recommend this Security Camera King 16 Channel Ultimate Mini system. The major disadvantage to this system is in the internal storage potential. If you prefer to maintain recorded files or archive them for quite some time before transferring them or deleting them, this unit has a limited amount of storage potential. Although it can still hold 2 internal hard drives for a total of 6 Terabytes of video data which is quite a bit, I can see where this could present itself as a challenge if you are looking to save recordings of all 16 channels, especially if you are recording continuously at a real time rate at a resolution of D1. Also, the "Description" tab features say that "video can be backed up to a DVD-RW" and that is incorrect. This unit is not big enough to hold an internal DVD burner. It may be able to back up to a USB connected DVD burner but you can't get one with the DVR. To be honest, this isn't much of an issue for me because I copy what I need to my USB thumb drive, transfer it to my computer and burn the disks from there. There is also a "Removable eSATA" icon in the description and this unit does not support that either. On the good side, the DVR supports multiple options for video displays including an HDMI output. There are a lot of features and settings that can be adjusted to your liking using the On Screen Display menu. Another fantastic feature is the Internet accessibility feature. You can set cameras to motion detection, and then have the DVR send you an e-mail when the camera sees something move. Also, you can have remote access to the system and monitor individual cameras if you have a smartphone with an Internet plan. For some added reassurance to the quality standards that Security Camera King says they adhere to, the DVR does come with a full 3 year warranty.

I own an auction warehouse business where we regularly (weekly) conduct various auctions. Our products consist of anything from bulk quantities of inexpensive novelties to precious metal products worth many thousands of dollars. Like most serious auction houses many of our items up for auction are put on display before the bidding begins. We use this system as a means of providing security and surveillance to protect those items both during times of active auctions and when no one is at the facility. The Security Camera King Complete 16 Channel Ultimate Mini DVR Security Camera System works very well for us an allows us to keep track of property that without it, we could be liable for if it ended up missing. We changed around a few of the cameras on the system, but for the most part we use the standard 600 TVL Infrared Dome cameras and the work well for us, both in daylight and in darkness. They produce a pretty good quality video picture especially for recording. By the way, my sons and I installed the system and we didn't encounter any difficulties with it at all. We had a few cabling run challenges to overcome but we took care of it. The DVR is nice too. I like the D1 resolution recording because it's a heck of lot bigger than the CIF resolution to me. Although I must admit, I didn't think through carefully enough about how much storage capacity we would really need when I purchased the system. We have an adequate amount of storage but I would like the opportunity to expand it, but with the "Mini" you are pretty limited in this respect as it doesn't accept eSATA drives either. Overall the performance is good and we all like the ability to use our smartphones to access the system remotely when necessary.

This is a nice security system and the DVR is a great buy. For about $400 less you get most of the same features of a full size 16 channel Ultimate DVR (sans the DVD burner for example) and for about $200 more you get real-time (30 frames per second) D1 resolution color recording. Actually, we use this unit more for real-time or live monitoring than we do for relying on the video recordings. We don't even use the alarm system but we do have three of the audio channels in use. Since the DVR has several monitors options (actually AT LEAST three could play simultaneously, HDMI, VGA, and BNC) and HDMI is one of them, we just bought a regular High Definition LCD TV to use as a monitor. Using the HDMI video output cable gives us video and audio both at the same time. The cameras are very easy to install, the only down side being that we had 16 of them. We didn't have or purchase a portable monitor so we used the shops two-way radios to communicate back in forth on aiming the cameras. After 2 or 3 cameras, two people can get pretty proficient this way. By the way, the cameras do an excellent job in infrared mode and although I didn't exactly measure it, I'd say the 50 foot infrared mode range from the built in LEDs cited by Security Camera King is right on the money. I can see all sorts of uses for this system from home to commercial business. We are very happy with ours and look forward to its continued operation. We did contact Security Camera King's support department, which I thought for sure would be located in some 3rd World country, but it wasn't. The gentleman we spoke to knew exactly what we needed to do to accomplish our set up and helped us through it all.

My company recently bought your 16 channel Ultimate Mini system for our office building and asked (told) me to take care of it. We upgraded the storage to the full 6 terabyte hard drive and the cameras as well to the 700 TVL 2.8 - 12 mm Indoor/Outdoor IR domes. Let me say right off the bat that I am not a security camera professional and I wasn't real thrilled with the extra duty of installing and maintaining this thing. That being said, let me also say that this system was very easy to install and set up (remember--not a CCTV person). I guess there would circumstances where 600 TVL fixed lens cameras would work just fine for this system, but on the other hand if you need to record in a high resolution like D1 you might as well bite the bullet and fork out the extra bucks for an upgrade to a varifocal lens cameras, especially in this case, to a 700 TVL varifocal lens camera. The adjustable lens allows you to adjust your camera for the best shot and combined with the 700 TVL color resolution and the D1 recording display, you can't ask for much more. The cameras are a good quality camera not only because they have a varifocal lens and 700 TVL resolution, but they also don't seem to present any problems during operation (like camera loss or small objects setting off the motion detection by mistake) and they have about a 50 foot infrared range in total darkness.
But as far as I am concerned, the DVR is the real "honey" in the system. It comes with audio support to record on four channels and 1 bidirectional talk channel. (Don't forget to purchase microphones if you plan to record audio, that doesn't happen by magic). For a "Mini" version this DVR has a lot of choices for displays. You can use HDMI, VGA, or BNC or all three at once and there is still room for a BNC spot monitor. The video options themselves are a work of art. You can record all 16 channels with D1 resolution and 30 frames per second simultaneously. You can also drop down the resolution lower (CIF for example) but I don't know why you'd want to do that, after all that's probably why you purchased the "Ultimate." You can split the display into a variety of options, 1, 4, 8, 8, or 16 and you can do the same with a spot split. Each camera also has four self defined four-sided zones for privacy masking if you need it. The DVRs OSD operates the features and the included USB mouse or the included infrared remote control operates the OSD. There as many more features like video loss or camera blank, motion detection, alarm input and the list goes on. I'll let you check it out further if you like by reading the specs and owner's manual. The DVR plays back just as well as it records. Finally, with all that stuff going on, it can still manage to be operated and monitored remotely via Internet. You can use a personal computer, MAC, iPad, or just about any smartphone along with Security Camera King's free downloadable apps. This is one of the better systems I've seen but I have to admit, I haven't seen many. That's why I gave it four stars instead of five.
Excellent System With A Large Video Recording Resolution

You got five stars from me on this one! I bought this for our salon. The building is actually split in two. On the larger side of the building we are a hair and beauty salon and on the other smaller side I sell wigs, hair extensions, etc. We both work on customers in the salon so the other room is not always staffed. Also, although we keep it locked, are cash register is near the door, farther away from us. This Security Camera King 16 channel Ultimate Mini DVR Security Camera System seems to do the right things for the right price for us. I installed the system myself in about two days. The 16 cameras give us complete coverage of both shops, all our doorways, the back area of the building, the cash register area, and the parking lot. The D1 video recording make for a nice, easily seen large video playback. I mounted a large screen LCD monitor in the salon (that's where we are most of the time) so we can check it while we continue to work on our customers. (One of my customers even told me once when someone was in the wig shop and I didn't know it). I ordered the system with 6 Terabytes of internal storage and that gives us a full two weeks plus of 24/7 recording which is plenty for our needs. If you're looking for a system with a larger display than CIF (in this case D1) in real-time, but don't need a lot of storage space, I recommend this one.
The quality of this package system is superb. For the quality of the cameras and especially the DVR I am really impressed with the economical pricing. If money is a concern for you not only is this system appropriate but if you install it yourself you'll save several thousand dollars. It's not often that you'll find a DVR with as many features as this Ultimate Mini has and that still records video in D1 resolution at 30 frames per second. I am also surprised at the quality of the audio recording. I have one camera set up with a microphone and it records conversations very clearly without a lot of background noise. The various video outputs are numerous and convenient but by far the best connection is the HDMI output. I can see my display in 1080p on my LCD monitor and also listen to the audio on the channel that I record it on. The On Screen Display is a nice way to control the many settings of the DVR and the cameras. The only negative aspect (if this really is one) is that it takes a little while to learn where all of the setting exist on the OSD. However, the OSD is set up to be pretty intuitive so it's really just a matter of getting used to it. We upgraded one of our cameras to a PTZ camera and I am surprised that this economy unit comes with 3D mouse control for a "Mini" system. The 3D mouse system allows you to just click your mouse on the screen where ever you want to look and the PTZ camera goes right there! This system also includes a USB mouse and an infrared remote control for operating the DVR.

I ordered this package on line and received it in 2 days. Everything was in tact and in perfect condition. The DVR was in great shape and in with the DVR included a USB mouse and an infrared remote control. I upgraded all of my cameras to the 600 TVL 2.8 to 12 mm varifocal dome camera, the OD-CM600IR100L2812-B. This camera does not have an on screen display menu with adjustable light setting features and such, but my camera application is pretty basic and the automatic settings on the cameras do just fine. I am glad I upgraded to the varifocal lenses though, because I like being able to mount the cameras then tweak the shot on each one to set it as wide or tight as I like. In some cases, it made the choice for where to mount the cameras even easier. Outdoors, I get just about the full listed infrared range of 100 feet with my cameras. They work great. As for the DVR, this thing is really a computer that records video. I mean it really does so much more than just strictly record video. It's loaded with all kinds of features, even for a "mini." This mini Ultimate gives me the D1 simultaneous recording resolution I want at 30 fps for all channels while saving me a few hundred bucks by not having the size and all the features of the full size Ultimate unit. For me, the only real "down" size to using the mini unit is that there is less space for additional internal hard disk drive storage. With 16 cameras all recording at D1 resolution, which is something to think about, especially if you want high quality recording for the cameras and record continuously. If you install this unit yourself (non-professional) it can be helpful to obtain (purchase or borrow) a portable monitor to set each camera up as you mount it, as the zoom and focus adjustments on these models are located on the outside of the camera case and our adjusted with a small screwdriver. The portable monitor can save you a lot of running back and forth to the DVR/monitor and running up and down a ladder. If you are looking for a big display recording without the full size DVR unit price, this is exactly what will do the job!
D1 Quality Recording On All 16 Cameras Simultaneously!

I ordered the Complete 16 Channel Ultimate Mini DVR Security Camera System from Security Camera King several months ago and I have nothing but good things to say about it. The cameras are very easy to handle and install only requiring exit holes for the cabling in the mounting surface a few screws (they're included) to mount each camera. The cameras have about a 50 foot infrared range and switch on automatically when light levels become to low to support normal color capturing. The infrared mode records in black and white and it is every bit as clear as the normal daylight color recording. The DVR is a trimmed down version of Security Camera King's full Ultimate version without the DVD burner option or space inside the unit for a lot of internal drives. There are no individual BNC loop outs for each camera (to set up spot cameras for example) but I don't need those functions anyway. It does offer HDMI and VGA monitor hookups (as well as BNC) and can display up to 1080p. The DVR is loaded with even more features including 16 alarm inputs with the ability to trigger 6 different alarm outputs at 12 VDC, an RS232 and an RS485 connector, as well as an RJ45 Ethernet connector. The DVR comes pre-programmed with a giant list of additional electronic features that can all be controlled by the DVR's on screen display menu using the included USB mouse or infrared remote control. The DVR can even play back up to 16 channels simultaneously. Also, you can monitor and control the system remotely using an Internet connection either via computer or your Smartphone (I use my iPhone). It works great and I love it!

Review by J. Leigh, Tall Tails Pet Motel on Nov 03, 2012
I own a small animal pet motel which houses our guests in lengths of stay from anywhere from 1 day to 1 month. We haven't had a security issues as yet (and I hope we never do) but just in case and to be on the safe side, last year I purchased a Security Camera King 4 channel Economy system to monitor the exterior of our business. I liked the system but the feature I really liked the most was the remote Internet accessibility from my home computer or my iPhone. I surveyed my customers about the idea of them being able to monitor their pets while they stay and it went over big time! So, we use the PACK-ULTIMATE-16-MINI 16 channel system to monitor each of our guests' "rooms." It works great, not only for the staff here but more importantly for our guests owners as they are able to log in and see their pet from any computer connected to the Internet or from their own Smart phone. The quality of the video is outstanding and our customers can even see their pet at night with the infrared cameras. The system was easy to install and I believe it has really boosted our business, which I'm happy to say keeps expanding. If we get any bigger, Security Camera King will see me back here soon!
