Is this controller meant to be used at the DVR side of the camera cable?  I'm assuming so to make it easier to adjust the camera OSD without having to be at the camera but I don't want to assume this.  If so, is there a maximum distance?

It is meant to be used DVR side for easier access to the OSD at the DVR. Keep in mind only these cameras work with it. As for working distance is should be connected at DVR then camera behind it. We haven't tested it any other way.
